Helm & Hem:

This week's piece is all about texture and reinvention — a corset built from secondhand fabric, layered with sheer mesh for depth and dimension, paired with a skirt cut from reclaimed upholstery fabric.

The corset's mesh overlay gives it that moody, worn-in edge — think structured bones under soft shadow, more midnight than daylight. The skirt carries that same weight and texture in heavier upholstery fabric, but stays practical: the waistband adjusts two inches in either direction for a fit that holds up over time.

Structured. Textured. A little dark, a little loud.

This week's Helm & Hem: a 1950s-inspired piece from Jake's earlier work, upcycled from cotton bed sheets.

It's a technique that takes real planning — the same striped fabric, with the lines running in different directions panel by panel, shaping proportion and movement into the silhouette.

Helm & Hem: The Western Satire Dress

This dress is part of a three-piece series Jake created for a magazine feature themed "Western Satire," constructed entirely from second-hand linen curtains.

The series reimagines how women were expected to dress at the turn of the 20th century — a time when layers of clothing and corsetry symbolized a loss of autonomy. Jake flips that narrative: the white linen represents purity, but a contemporary cut through the arms and hips turns it into something empowering instead. Inspired by Brigitte Bardot's role as a symbol of women's empowerment in the west, this piece transforms a traditionally restrictive silhouette into a statement of freedom.

It's the perfect chance to connect with other local sewists, trade stories, and maybe walk away with fun new-to-you fabric finds that might inspire your next project.
