Ever wonder why so many crystals end in “ite”?

The “ite” ending has deep roots in history. It comes from the ancient Greek word lithos, meaning stone. Over time, scholars and early scientists adopted “ite” to identify different types of stone and mineral substances.

Fluorite like what is pictured above was named in the 16th century from the Latin word fluere, meaning “to flow,” because it was used as a flux in metal smelting. When the scientific naming system developed, it became fluor-ite, identifying it as a distinct mineral species.
