After 29 years of being a comicmonger, I’m leaving the capitalist system behind. On August 1, Dylan Massie (our longtime associate) assumes control of the comic shop in Evanston, renaming it Watcher Comix.
A couple decades back, in two unrelated conversations, Jim Hanley and Rory Root asked me if I had succession plans for the store. Both mentioned how they wanted what they built to continue on. I hadn’t considered one then, but rarely a day goes by in Evanston without someone saying how important the store is to them. Now I understand what Jim and Rory were talking about.
I’m delighted that Dylan has decided to move the shop forward. He brings a business degree, dedication, enthusiasm and unmatched product knowledge. I don’t want to spoil any surprises, but there will be some wonderful new directions and events.
This December will mark 25 years of selling comics in Evanston. Please continue to shop with us. Continue to support local bookshops. Continue to frequent downtown locations. Times can get tough, but we all want a comic book shop in downtown Evanston. Let’s continue to work towards that end and keep one going for another 25 years.
Special thanks to Andy Spatz for keeping our Evanston rent under control and Gary Colabuono who provided mentorship during all three decades. Through those years my business card titles went from “Upstart” to “Figurehead” to “Devil’s Great-Grandson” and now, finally, “Gentleman of Leisure.”
If you’d like to say hello, goodbye I’ll be working Tuesday through Friday 10-3pm. I’ll also work my last Saturday on July 26 from open until 3pm. Stop by, reminisce, shower gifts and praise, and make your final Comix Revolution purchases.
