Crystal Origins Shungite
Shungite is a rare, carbon-rich stone made of up to 99% carbon and contains fullerenes, also known as buckyballs—hollow molecules made of 60 carbon atoms.
It also includes micro and macro minerals such as quartz, mica, albite, and pyrite. Shungite is found mainly in Shunga, Karelia, Russia, with smaller deposits reported in Austria, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kazakhstan, and the United States.
Estimated to be at least 2 billion years old, it predates complex organic life.
Shungite is classified by carbon content and appearance, ranging from Elite or Noble shungite—a rare, high-purity form with a silvery surface often used for water purification and healing—to raw shungite, which is commonly used in jewelry and decorative items. Other varieties include bright, semi-bright, semi-dull, and dull forms, based on the stone's lustre.
