HOPEFULLY THIS ANSWERS ALL THE NFA QUESTIONS I HAVE BEEN GETTING THIS WEEKEND!
1) The only thing the bill did was remove the $200 dollar tax stamp STARTING on JAN 1, 2026.
2) Fingerprints, passport photos, and registrations are still required as well as the approval process.
3) Wait times - Good question! My guess is starting Jan. 1, 2026 the system will get flooded and the ATF/NFA website will be down for weeks on end. Also, wait times might get back to being measured in multiple months instead of a week or two.
4) Trusts - I still recommend purchasing the single shot trusts that Silencer Shop offers for $25 dollars. My fear is that just as easily as the stamp was taken to $0 dollars, it can be re-implemented and/or increased to higher fees when the government flips to the Democrats. It could go up to a thousand dollars, three thousand dollars, or even more. I think the trusts will protect you in the future from a potential increase.
5) "What about all the lawsuits that have been filed this week?" - Another good question and the answer is "who knows"! I think that question will take years to be answered. It seems to be that when it comes to gun related cases they just disappear into the wind and nobody ever gets an answer because it sits in some random circuit court and just waits.
6) "Colby what should I do?" - If you want a suppressor for the upcoming fall hunting seasons, I would come in now and pick one up. Then, if you want a second or third suppressor, you can wait until Jan. 1, 2026. There are multiple suppressors that are running a free tax stamp promo right now. Keep in mind, the suppressors running these promos are on the higher end of suppressor price ranges.
7) "I just want to wait until Jan. 1, can you hold a can for me until then?" Yes, both myself and Silencer Shop are offering a buy now file later option. Basically you are paying for the suppressor now, then on Jan. 1, 2026 I am filing the paperwork. I think this might be the best option if you want to wait! Not only will the wait times be affected Jan. 1, I think the suppressor supply will be limited because of the influx of new buyers.
