I’m always searching for pieces with age, character and a story—especially those timeless treasures that make a home feel collected rather than decorated.

These plates were a last minute grab. I remember as I gathered them all up, a woman said to me “I was going to grab them but they don’t have a mark”. There was something about these plates that I couldn’t shake. They are antique Coalport from c. 1820-1840.

Come thrift for vintage home décor with me at Brimfield! 🧺

With acres of booths and treasures everywhere you look, Brimfield is one of my favorite places to hunt for pieces that make a home feel collected rather than decorated all at once.

When I’m sourcing, I look for warm patina, interesting shapes and pieces that add texture—ironstone, floral china, old linens, baskets, primitive kitchenware and small cottage treasures. I also check condition, look for identifying marks and think about how each find could be styled in a home.

Not everything comes home with me, but the thrill is in searching until that one special piece stops me in my tracks.

Why is ironstone called “ironstone” if it isn’t made of iron? 🤔

Despite its name, ironstone does not get its strength from iron. The name was chosen to emphasize the pottery’s exceptional durability—suggesting it was almost as strong as iron!

Developed in England during the early 1800s, ironstone was made from a dense blend of refined clay and minerals such as feldspar and flint. When fired at high temperatures, these ingredients partially fused together through a process called vitrification. This created a hard, heavy, less-porous pottery body that resisted cracks and chips better than ordinary earthenware. Its thick, glasslike glaze added another protective layer.

Charles James Mason patented his famous “Mason’s Patent Ironstone China” in 1813, helping make the name widely recognized. Ironstone offered families the elegant appearance of porcelain while being sturdy enough for everyday use.

Its substantial weight and durability made it especially popular in Victorian homes, farmhouses, hotels, and restaurants.

Today, antique ironstone is loved for its simple beauty, creamy coloring, aged crazing, and timeless farmhouse charm. So while iron isn’t what makes it strong, the name told buyers exactly what they needed to know: this pottery was built to last. 🤍
