A custom class ring created to celebrate this student's journey through his high school years and the memories that will last a lifetime.

At the center shines a hand-selected blue gemstone, proudly representing the Burns High School and the "Marching Dawgs." Surrounding the centerpiece are meaningful details chosen specifically for this rising senior, including a custom guitar design inspired by his passion for music and accent gemstones that bring both the guitar and the Bulldog's collar to life.

🔍 Fun Fact Friday: Gemology Edition – Emeralds & Oiling

Did you know that nearly all natural emeralds have fractures and inclusions? In fact, those tiny internal features are often considered part of an emerald’s unique fingerprint often called “jardin” French for “garden.”

Because emeralds form under intense geological conditions, they commonly contain surface-reaching fractures. To improve their appearance, most emeralds are treated with a colorless oil, traditionally cedarwood oil, which fills these fractures and makes them less visible. This treatment can dramatically improve clarity without changing the emerald’s color.

Gemologists evaluate emerald enhancement levels as:
💚 Minor
💚💚 Moderate
💚💚💚 Significant

Under magnification, an untreated fracture often shows colorful “flash effects” or obvious breaks. An oiled fracture appears less noticeable because the oil has a refractive index closer to the emerald itself. Some emeralds are even filled with synthetic resins instead of oil, which can sometimes produce blue or orange flash effects under magnification.

Here’s the important part: Oiling is accepted throughout the gemstone industry, but the amount of enhancement can significantly affect an emerald’s value. Two emeralds may look similar to the naked eye, yet one may be worth substantially more because it has only minor enhancement.

Think about it the next time you admire an emerald. The beauty you see may be the result of both nature and a little help from a gemologist!
