This is the first Saturday that the flower stand isn’t open since the beginning of August. The gardens have definitely shifted in this past week due to much cooler temperatures in the overnight hours. Petals aren’t as vibrant and things are noticeably slowing down.
As I walked through the rows earlier this morning, it was slower-paced and with more intention compared to the busy bustle of previous Saturdays as I prepped flowers for the stand. This morning, I just took it all in. The autumn months of planning and preparation, the winter months of seed starting in the basement, hardening off and transplanting seeds in mid spring, and all of the ups and downs that came afterwards this past spring and summer.
And I will miss it all. The afternoons on the couch with seed catalogs, the evenings in the basement, marking growth and preparing new seed cells in my winter sweaters. The never-ending up and down the stairs to take seedlings inside and outside for the hardening off process, the first days out in the gardens, constantly checking overnight temperatures and covering more tender plants from unexpectedly late frost. The first signs of buds and then excitedly, noting what colored petals unfurl from the centers. And the weeks of summer where the garden explodes with vibrant colors. The early morning sunrises and late evening sunsets that bathe the flowers in such special and unique light. The tiniest critters and creatures that cohabitate the space and allow me to share in all of the beauty of their home.
I stumbled upon micro flower farming a few years ago and while I will miss 2026, I will enjoy the few flowers that remain before turning my eyes to next year‘s gardens and a whole new year of planning and growth.
