We get a surprising number of inquiries about antique floor grates and registers, and it had me thinking about something we were talking about today.

My son and I were driving around looking at some of the older homes in the area, admiring the ones that have been thoughtfully cared for over the years. We talked about how every older house needs updates. New insulation, better wiring, efficient heating—those improvements just make sense.

But it’s always nice to see when the finishing touches stay true to the home’s history.

Original woodwork. Old light fixtures. Door hardware. Floor grates.

The details that many people overlook are often the things that give a house its personality.

Maybe that’s part of why we get so many questions about old floor grates. They’re practical, of course, but they also reflect a time when even the functional pieces of a home were made with care and attention to detail.

What’s a detail in an old house that always catches your eye?

These two signed smallmouth bass mounts were created by renown Maine taxidermist David Footer, whose work has hung in sporting camps, lodges, and lakeside cottages.

The mounts still bear Footer’s workshop numbers—a small reminder that every fish had its own story before becoming part of Maine sporting history.

Whether you’re an angler, camp owner, or collector of Maine-made craftsmanship, pieces like these capture a tradition that feels right at home in the Pine Tree State.

The guide stepped inside.

The paddle leaned against the wall.
The decoy was set on the chair.
The boots were kicked off by the door.

And that red buffalo plaid jacket? It had already seen a few seasons.

Made by Johnson Woolen Mills in Vermont, a company that has been producing wool outdoor clothing since 1842, these jackets became favorites among hunters, woodsmen, fishermen, and anyone who spent their days outdoors in the northern woods. This example features a beautiful zippered hood, in a size 48, and remains in very good, wearable condition.

Some pieces just feel like they’ve earned their place.

This vintage Mt. Zircon Spring cooler from Rumford, Maine has plenty of life left in it. Fill it with ice and cold drinks for a wedding, family reunion, camp gathering, or backyard barbecue, and it becomes a conversation piece.

We love finding items that can still do the job they were built to do—while bringing a little Maine history along with them.

Functional, sturdy, and full of character.

A little color for what looks like a gray New England day.

This vintage Mexican wedding blanket carries the kind of warmth that feels right at home in an old Maine farmhouse, lakeside camp, or cabin porch chair. Traditionally given to celebrate new beginnings, these woven blankets symbolized comfort, protection, and a life built together — meant to be used, cherished, and passed along.

The vivid stripes may come from far beyond New England, but somehow they pair perfectly with weathered wood floors, cool evenings, and the simple tradition of gathering close.

Classic enamelware with just the right amount of charm — a little camp, a little cottage, with that clean look that never feels overdone.

Lightweight, durable, and easy to live with, enamelware has long been appreciated for its practicality as much as its appearance. Designed for everyday use, these pieces move effortlessly from kitchen to table while bringing warmth and character to the spaces around them.

The kind of collection that feels equally at home in a lakeside cabin or a thoughtfully collected kitchen. Functional, unfussy, and timeless.

Boston has a long history with chocolate. Some of America’s earliest chocolate making happened there in the 1700s, when cocoa beans arrived through Boston’s busy shipping ports and were turned into drinking chocolate for New England kitchens.

WANETA COCOA was produced by the Massachusetts Chocolate Company in Boston during the early 1900s through the 1930s. At the time, cocoa was marketed as a pure and nutritious food product — even recommended for invalids and convalescents.

This WAN-ETA COCOA mason jar is a wonderful survivor from that era. What fascinates me most is the packaging itself. Imagine heading to the pantry and scooping cocoa from an embossed glass jar instead of today’s plastic containers. The warm amber glass, bold lettering, and simple utilitarian design make it such a beautiful example of early advertising and everyday kitchen history. The dark glass served a practical purpose protecting its contents from sunlight degradation.

I can just picture it sitting on a pantry shelf beside a wood cookstove on a cold Maine morning, waiting for baking days and cups of hot cocoa. Today, it would make such a fun gift for a chocolate lover, coffee bar, or vintage kitchen collection.
