That opossum wandering through your yard at night may be doing more useful work than you realize.

Virginia opossums are mostly nocturnal and spend their nights searching for food. They are opportunistic omnivores, meaning their diet can include insects, worms, small animals, fruit, carrion and other foods they encounter.

In studies of opossum diets across the United States, insects have accounted for roughly 3% to 13.5% of their food, depending on the population and season.

They can also eat some of the insects people would rather not find around their homes.

Opossums have been documented feeding on yellow jackets, and mammals are among the predators known to raid social-wasp nests for their larvae.

But their role is broader than pest control.

By consuming carrion and a wide variety of food, opossums are part of the natural cleanup and food webs that operate in backyards, forests and other habitats.

They are not a replacement for professional pest control, and they certainly won’t eliminate every insect in your yard.

Still, the next time an opossum passes through after dark, it may be worth remembering that it is not necessarily looking for trouble.

It may simply be looking for dinner.

And some of that dinner could be the pests you don’t want around.

This unit sold for $80 in November 2022. It was one of two units owned by a hotel. Several nice lamps, chairs, and tables within this unit - a great buy for a thrift store, garage sale, or changing around your own home.

Vet's office said they don't do full grooming, but that they could remove mats/give the tailless wonder a sanitary cut.
