We’re proud to keep history alive the old-fashioned way — by opening our doors every single day and sharing it with everyone who walks in. From vintage treasures to simple moments that feel like stepping back in time, this old building still has a lot to say.

And to be honest? The walls have probably heard more town gossip than anyone alive.

Do you ever wonder what it takes to run one of the last big, authentic general stores in a tiny historic town?

It’s early mornings, late nights, and a suspicious amount of time arguing with shelves like they have opinions and restyling displays just one more time.

It is equal parts magic and “am I okay?”

But truthfully....

it’s creating a place where people slow down, smile, and feel something special.

So, when you walk through our doors, just know...

every corner, every shelf, every tiny detail…

…someone probably lost sleep over it.

Does anyone remember these? 🤍

Angel Mints — the little white, melt-away peppermint candies are a classic American mint dating back to 1919.

I didn't know about them until now, so I just had to get them on the shelves. They are so refreshing, they do bring back memories, even though I just had my first taste.

As we ring in a brand new year at The Golden Gait Mercantile, my heart feels very full.

2025 stretched me in ways I never expected. Juggling three locations — Golden Gait Mercantile, Buttercup Coffee, and Sunshine and Fog — has been exhausting, humbling, and at times overwhelming… but it has also been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Every early morning, every late night, every moment of doubt has been met with moments of deep gratitude, kindness, and community that remind me why I do this.

These businesses aren’t just shops to me — they are love letters to Ferndale. They are built on passion, connection, nostalgia, creativity, and the belief that small, local places still matter. And you — our customers, neighbors, visitors, and friends — are the reason they continue to exist.

Thank you for showing up. Thank you for supporting us. Thank you for believing in these little spaces that are held together with heart, hard work, and a whole lot of hope.

As we step into this new year, I’m choosing gratitude over exhaustion and joy over fear. I can’t wait to see what’s ahead — together.

These beautiful ladies, Brenda and Laurie are in full-on Christmas magic mode — frantically fluffing, hanging, arranging, sparkling, and spreading cheer for Ferndale’s beloved Christmas Tree Lighting tonight!

If you’ve lived here long enough, you know this tradition is pure hometown heart. For generations, families have gathered on Main Street to watch our giant spruce light up the night — a tradition that dates all the way back to the early 1900s, when neighbors would bring lanterns and candles to celebrate the season together. Today, thousands come to feel that same small-town.

⭐ A huge, grateful shoutout to our amazing Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department! ⭐
They’re the ones who climb the ladders, string the lights, check every bulb twice, and make sure our town shines bright. We couldn’t do this without them — and we appreciate them more than words can say.

Christmas in Ferndale is something truly magical, and we’re so blessed to share it with all of you.

My heart feels a little heavy today

Opening Buttercup Coffee has been a beautiful new chapter — but it’s also taken more of me than I ever imagined. And as I look around the Golden Gait Mercantile — at the stacks of boxes waiting to be unpacked and the empty shelves that should be filled with treasures — I feel a pang of disappointment in myself.

This store has always been my heart and soul, a place I’ve poured love, care, and countless hours into. I pride myself on keeping it full, tidy, and welcoming — and right now, it’s not quite there.

But please don’t worry… I will get it together.
The Mercantile has weathered many seasons, and so have I. With a little grace, a lot of hard work, and your continued love, these shelves will soon be brimming again — with charm, nostalgia, and that unmistakable Golden Gait magic.
