That task is getting heavier.

Every day it waits, it collects a little more dread—and soon we’re reacting to the weight of avoiding it as much as the work itself.

Write down the whole task. Name the smallest physical action that begins it. Cut away everything else, hold that first step in your hands, and do it.

The magic gets the energy moving. Your hands carry it forward.

Music does more than change the mood. It can create space inside us. In this clip, Sharon Knight talks about the way vibration and harmony can build entire “cathedrals” in the mind—the same kind of inner spaces we enter through magic, trance, imagination, and ritual. That idea stopped me for a minute. Because maybe part of the reason music can shift us so quickly is that it gives us somewhere else to go. Sometimes protection looks like a boundary. Sometimes it looks like motorcycle boots, metal in your head, and full porcupine mode. In this clip, Sharon Knight talks about using music to change the energy she carried when she needed to feel tougher, sharper, and less approachable. That opened up a much bigger conversation for us about protection magic: when we need armor, when we need softness, and how the soundtrack in our head can help us choose which energy we bring into the room. From the new episode of Chats with Aunt Jacki: Sound Shifts Energy: Music, Magic & Protection with Sharon Knight.

*What if you don’t need a stronger energetic boundary? What if you need a better song?* In this episode of Chats with Aunt Jacki, I sit down with musician, songwriter, magical practitioner, and longtime friend Sharon Knight to explore how music can shift our energy, support protection work, and become part of a magical practice. We talk about singing as an embodied form of magic, rhythm and trance, drumming when words aren’t enough, singing bowls and resonance, and the music we use to focus, release emotion, or change the way we move through a room. We also get into the difference between protection that supports us and protection that turns us into full-on porcupines, why you do not have to be a good singer for singing to matter, and how a song can become an energetic container you carry with you. This is a conversation about music as vibration, expression, protection, communication, and magic—and about becoming more intentional with the soundtrack you bring into your life. Featuring Sharon Knight.

What happens when you actually begin tending an ancestor altar? Emily Bolander shares what she has seen happen when people establish a regular relationship with their ancestors: a greater sense of support, connection, and even a feeling that life begins to flow differently. You don’t need an elaborate altar to begin. The relationship is built over time by showing up. This clip comes from The Ancestors We Carry: Roots, Place & Everyday Magic with Emily Bolander, on Chats with Aunt Jacki. Watch the full conversation for more about ancestor altars, family objects, graveyards, spirits of place, complicated ancestors, and the everyday practice of building a relationship with those who came before us. Ancestor work gets very pretty on the internet. There are beautiful photographs, antique candlesticks, flowers, carefully chosen offerings, and probably somebody's great-grandmother looking appropriately stern in a sepia portrait. I love a beautiful altar as much as anybody, but our actual families are rarely that well behaved. Some of our ancestor...

What does it mean to carry your ancestors with you—even when you no longer live on the land they came from? In this episode of _Chats with Aunt Jacki_, I’m joined by my longtime friend Emily Bolander for a conversation about ancestry, place, memory, and the everyday ways we stay connected to the people who came before us. Emily shares how growing up in Central New York shaped her spiritual life, what it was like to leave a place where her family roots run deep, and how ancestor work became a way of carrying that connection forward. We talk about graveyards, family objects, handwritten signatures, food, ancestor altars, grave dirt, cemetery water, and the strange little ways our dead sometimes make themselves known. We also get practical about ancestor work: how to begin an altar, what to do when you don’t know where your ancestors are buried, how to work with complicated family histories, and why relationship matters more than doing everything “perfectly.” This is a conversation about roots, belonging, remembrance, and the magic that can happen when we stop treating our ancestors like history and start recognizing them as part of our living story. *Guest Bio* Emily Bolander is a longtime magical practitioner, tarot reader, Reiki Master, teacher, and spiritual consultant. For nearly three decades, she has worked with tarot, candle magic, folk traditions, ancestors, saints, Hecate, crossed conditions, and the energy of place. She has also founded and led a coven for many years, bringing deep experience in magical practice, teaching, and community leadership. *Guest Contact / Links* Email: mailto:[email protected] Instagram: ** Those are the two contact methods Emily gives at the end of the episode.

One more thing can wait.

When you keep clearing tiny tasks before beginning the work that actually matters, use a key to mark the threshold. Name the first real step, clear a space for it, and begin before you move the key.

Save this working for the next time “being productive” becomes a very convincing form of avoidance.
