Hey Bound Brook High School!

Big news. The trophy cases have arrived and we tested a new lighting system today. The Hall of Fame area is coming together and we hope to be done with Phase 1 in about two weeks.

Today is hard.
Today my friend Greg Tufaro is being laid to rest. God I miss him. Yesterday I stood in line at the funeral home for two hours to pay my respects to his wife Cyndi, and goodbye to Greg. And it hurt. I went home and cried as I have done many times over the last week. Our paths crossed a few years ago with work and we became fast friends. We discovered we each had Multiple Myeloma a rare form of blood and bone cancer. My body responded well to treatment, his did not. But his spirit never dipped. He was always positive even in the face of adversity which he faced often. As a volunteer with the Cancer Hope Network it is my role as a "Peer Mentor" to coach patients through their diagnosis and treatment. In a way, Greg and I used each other for that. He wasn't on Facebook so he would ask me to ask others in various Myeloma Forum boards about new treatments or clinical trials, as his options were starting to run out, which I feverishly did. Over the weekend I realized something. In addition to losing a good friend whose phone calls and visits I welcomed day or night, I have also lost my peer mentor. It makes me appreciate my role with the Cancer Hope Network even more.
Greg and Cyndi were/are two of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting/knowing in my lifetime.
This is not a post about me being upset with the loss of a friend, although I am. Instead it is a post with a request. Over the next few weeks if you get the chance, perform a random act of kindness in Greg's honor/memory. Maybe buy a cup of coffee for someone in line at your favorite coffee shop, or simply smile and hold the door for a stranger. Whatever you do, do it for Greg.
The last thing Greg said to me when we talked on the phone and he made a point to make sure I was paying attention was, "I love you brother." I will treasure and hold onto that one sentence forever. And I am so glad I responded "I love you too, bud." So one more thing you can do in Greg's honor is tell your friends and family you love them. Because tomorrow is promised to no one.

Today, I am heartbroken.
Remembering Greg Tufaro
Some people come into your life for a season. Others leave a mark that stays with you forever. Greg Tufaro was one of those people.
Greg and I shared a friendship that went far beyond the usual. We became connected by our love of sports, our work in the community, and eventually by something neither of us ever wanted to have in common, cancer. Specifically, Multiple Myeloma.
Our battles were different, but in many ways, we understood each other in a way that few others could. We knew the uncertainty, the treatments, the exhaustion, the setbacks and, the pain, most importantly, the determination it took to keep moving forward. We weren't simply fighting a disease. We were fighting to continue living the lives we loved and to make a difference while we were here.
Through it all, Greg remained Greg — passionate, caring, funny, determined and deeply committed to the people and causes that mattered to him.
One of those causes was the Marisa Tufaro Foundation. I was honored to be able to help Greg and his wife Cyndi with the foundation and its mission. But the truth is, I probably received far more from that experience than I ever gave.
Greg appreciated my involvement, and he made sure I knew it. Our friendship grew from there. He often asked me why I wouldn't charge them for whatever award or service I was providing. I said " I want whatever money you would spend on awards to be applied back to the Foundation." I don't think he ever fully understood that. His gratitude meant a great deal to me. But what I hope he knew was that I didn't help because I expected anything in return. I helped because I believed in Greg, I believed in his family, and I believed in the incredible work being done in Marisa's memory.
The foundation became another connection between us — a reminder that even in the midst of something as difficult as losing a child and battling a serious illness, Greg and Cyndi chose to turn their pain into purpose, and their loss into a legacy of helping others.
I will always be grateful that our paths crossed.
I will remember the conversations, the laughter, the phone calls, the shared experiences and the times when we could simply talk about life. He would stop by my house where we would talk about the foundation, our disease and yes even our own mortalities. I will remember the strength Greg showed when things weren't easy. And I will remember that, despite everything he was facing, he continued to care deeply about other people.
Our fight with Multiple Myeloma created a bond between us, but it was our friendship that made that bond meaningful.
I wish we could have had more time. I wish we could have enjoyed that steak dinner we promised ourselves when he achieved remission, which he never did. More conversations. More laughs. More opportunities to stand together and support one another.
But I take comfort in knowing that Greg's impact will continue — through his family, through his friends, through the people he helped and through the countless lives he touched.
Greg, thank you for your friendship. Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for allowing me to play even a small role in something so important to you and your family.
And thank you for reminding me that even when life gives us a fight we never asked for, we can still choose how we fight — with courage, with compassion and with purpose.
Rest easy, my friend.
The fight is over.
Your legacy lives on.
Jim

Six months before I opened Crown Trophy of Flemington, the Union Hotel and its restaurant closed for good. A real blow to the community. Three other developers tried to renovate the hotel and came up short before Jack Cust stepped up to the plate to redevelop/reimagine the hotel. For the past 16 years I have sat on various iterations of the Flemington Improvement District Board as we tried to revitalize the Borough of Flemington of which the Union Hotel was to be a key component of that revitalization. Today I was given a tour along with the rest of the Board of the Flemington Business Improvement District of not only the hotel portion, but the residences/apartments and four restaurants as well. Folks, to say I was blown away is a massive understatement. This project will put Flemington back on the map as a destination once again. They are already booking corporate events, there is very high interest in the Steak House and other restaurants. The plaza will be used for many events and gatherings. It is what this town so desperately needs. Hats off to Jack Cust and his team, plus the folks from Marriott I met today for creating Flemington's newest destination/go to place. There were many times when Jack could have walked away and said "It's just not worth it." Thank God he didn't. I can't wait to have my first steak at the new steakhouse. And I can't wait for all of you to see what Jack's vision has turned into. Welcome to Flemington where you can shop, dine, tour and enjoy!
