How the Series Came About
After the ultra-violent, polybagged Punisher: Red Band (2025) miniseries — a bloody, memory-shattered prologue — Benjamin Percy launched a new ongoing Punisher in February 2026 with artist José Luis Soares.
Percy has described Red Band as the necessary first strike: “The book was polybagged, because it was a biohazard, dripping with blood. Now that you know we aren’t fooling around, we’re entering a new phase of storytelling that will serve both as a continuation of Red Band and a fresh start for new readers.”
Percy’s vision is pure noir crime and psychological horror. No superhero zaniness. No softening. “My favorite Frank is the one Garth Ennis wrote — a demon, a monster. Some good things might result from his behavior, but he’s doing terrible, terrible things.” He wanted a cracked-window view of New York: grit, scars, shadows, and the kind of violence that feels inevitable.
José Luis Soares delivers exactly that — grounding detail, physical menace, and brutal action that makes every gunshot and broken bone land with weight.
Synopsis So Far ( #1– #7)
#1– #5 – The Jigsaw Agenda
Frank Castle returns to New York with a damaged memory, hunting answers and criminals in equal measure. The notorious Billy Russo / Jigsaw is back — not with street wars, but with a surgical campaign designed to dismantle the Punisher piece by piece.
Targeting body, mind, and soul. Spilling innocent blood. Pushing Frank to his absolute limit. Allies like Microchip reappear. Wilson Fisk and Tombstone hover in the criminal underworld.
Frank is battered, bruised, and bloodied, forced to confront the ghosts of his past while his own body begins to turn against him. The arc builds to a vicious confrontation that leaves Frank reeling but still standing.
#6– #7 – The Long Bullet / Collateral Damage
A new enemy emerges: Collateral Damage. One of Frank’s failures — a former victim caught in the crossfire (hinted to involve the Kingpin) — now kept alive by a painful metal exoskeleton piercing infected skin.
Powered by rage and a remote-controlled “smart” bullet that can travel across the city and return to its shooter. Bodies of petty criminals and civilians drop with the same signature round. Authorities blame the Punisher… until the bullet flies back through Frank’s own hand.
In #7 the confrontation arrives: one of Frank’s past mistakes drags itself, kicking and screaming and bleeding, to his door to look him dead in the eyes.
Frank is still just a man. And men make mistakes that come back armed.
Current Issue – #8 & “BIG GUNS”
TARGET: WADE WILSON!
As the spectacle of the summer rolls on, Frank Castle finds himself at odds with the Regeneratin’ Degenerate, Deadpool. But not all is as it seems. A mysterious interloper is manipulating circumstances and people alike, setting two of Marvel’s most iconic characters on a collision course with calamity.
This is Part 2 of the four-part “Big Guns” crossover (Deadpool #8 → Punisher #8 → Deadpool #9 → Punisher #9). Multiple forces converge on an ultimate weapon. Bullseye and Black Hole get pulled in. A classic villain receives a reinvention and glow-up. Deadpool’s new Merc Mobile rolls into the chaos. Percy promises non-stop mayhem and a weapon that will change the 616 forever.
Frank and Wade despise each other. The math works itself out — violently.
Where It Is Headed
After “Big Guns” wraps in October, the series continues with hard-crime installments before shifting into a larger arc called “The Hunters” (which may bring back a certain baddie from Punisher: Red Band).
Guest artist Annalisa Borgo debuts on a later issue involving a human-trafficking ring that goes even deeper into horror and rot. Percy has signed a new multi-year Marvel deal and is deep into future issues. The war never ends.
Relation to Past Series, Animation & Movies
Classic runs: Gerry Conway’s original creation (Amazing Spider-Man #129), the 1980s ongoing, Garth Ennis’s legendary MAX and Marvel Knights eras (the gold standard for many), Jason Aaron’s Hand-era take, and the various limited series.
Recent: The 2022–2023 Aaron run, the Joe Garrison temporary Punisher, and Percy’s own Red Band as direct prologue.
Movies: Dolph Lundgren (1989), Thomas Jane (2004), Ray Stevenson (2008), and the current MCU incarnation with Jon Bernthal (Daredevil, The Punisher Netflix series, Daredevil: Born Again, and appearances in Spider-Man: Brand New Day).
Animation & games: Multiple animated appearances and classic video games that emphasize the pure vigilante fantasy.
Percy’s run feels closest in spirit to Ennis — a broken man in a broken city, doing terrible things for reasons that never fully heal him.
Characters from Their Point of View
Frank Castle / The Punisher
“Memory’s full of holes. Body’s full of scars. The mission is the only thing that still fits. Wilson is a walking liability with a healing factor and a mouth that never shuts. Someone’s playing both of us. I don’t care who. I care that the bullet finds its target.”
Wade Wilson / Deadpool (crossing over)
“Frank doesn’t do banter. He does terminal velocity lead. Which is fine. I’ve got a new ride, a new job, and a new enemy who already wants me in a body bag. Let’s see who runs out of ammo first.”
Collateral Damage
“Castle made me this. The exoskeleton keeps me moving. The bullet keeps score. He thinks he’s cleaning the city. He’s just making more of us.”
Jigsaw (Billy Russo)
“Frank broke my face. Now I break everything he still has left — body, mind, and the few people stupid enough to stand near him.”
Short Character Bios
Frank Castle / The Punisher
Ex-Marine. Family slaughtered. One-man war on crime. Memory damaged but mission intact. A demon in a skull shirt who remains, at the end of every fight, just a man.
Jigsaw (Billy Russo)
Frank’s most personal and enduring enemy. Once a handsome crime figure, now a scarred, obsessive architect of psychological warfare.
Collateral Damage
New villain. Former bystander turned living weapon by Frank’s crossfire. Exoskeleton, remote-controlled bullets, and a hatred that believes killing the Punisher is mercy for the entire city.
Microchip
Frank’s long-time tech and intelligence ally. Still in the fight when few others remain.
Bullseye & Black Hole
Crossing into “Big Guns” — the ultimate marksman and a mysterious manipulator, both hungry for the same prize.
Creator Bios & Quotes
Benjamin Percy
Award-winning novelist (The Sky Vault, Red Moon, The Wilding, etc.), short-story writer, essayist (Thrill Me), screenwriter, and one of Marvel’s most consistent voices for damaged, violent characters (Wolverine, X-Force, Ghost Rider, Hellverine, Red Hulk, Wade Wilson: Deadpool, Punisher). He treats Frank Castle as noir crime and psychological horror rather than superhero spectacle.
On the crossover: “When you’re writing The Punisher, and you’re writing Deadpool — two street-level characters with opposite personalities — the math works itself out. I had to bring them together. Violently… Unlike Frank and Wade — who naturally despise each other — Geoff Shaw and José Luis are a perfect pairing, the best pens drawing the biggest guns.”
On tone: “When I’m writing Punisher, I’m in noir crime territory. There’s zero zaniness.”
José Luis Soares Pinto
Brazilian comic artist (born 1981 in Itapipoca, Ceará). Entered the U.S. market through Ed Benes’s studio. Extensive DC work (Teen Titans, Su***de Squad, Action Comics, Justice League, Supergirl, and more) plus credits at Dark Horse, Dynamite, Avatar, Valiant, and others. Brings grounded, detailed, menacing physicality perfectly suited to Percy’s street-level brutality. Percy praised him for “channeling all the grit and scars and shadows you’d expect from Frank’s cracked-window view of the world.”
David Marquez
Main cover artist for the series — delivering iconic, high-impact images that capture the weight of Frank’s war.
The Thrill
This is Punisher the way the character was meant to be felt: relentless, damaged, and terrifying. No redemption arc. No easy victories. Just a man with a skull on his chest and a city full of targets who keep creating more monsters in his wake.
“Big Guns” puts him toe-to-toe with the one force of chaos that refuses to stay dead.
Bullets will fly.
Blood will flow.
And when the smoke clears, only one of them will still be standing the same way he started.
Load the magazine.
The war continues.
