Service is at the heart of Rotary, and Floyd County Rotarians regularly put that mission into action throughout our community.

Our service includes signature annual events such as the Chili Cookoff, which raises funds for local first responders, and the annual Floyd Empty Bowls fundraiser, benefiting Floyd Backpack, a program of New River Community Action. We also lend a hand to other community organizations and causes, including Plenty!, the Blue Ridge Parkway and The June Bug Center. During the school year, following our weekly meetings, Rotarians head over to help bag food for the Backpack Program.

This past weekend, Floyd County Rotarians continued that tradition of service by volunteering at Floyd Center for the Arts' award winning, annual Floyd Living Traditions Festival.
Pictured are Floyd Rotarians Karin Grosshans and Nancy Bell. Paula Feather, not pictured, also volunteered at the festival.

Abby Whitt, Editor of Floyd Times, was our featured speaker at last week's Rotary meeting.

Abby shared the history and mission of the Floyd Times and talked about its role in providing local news and information to the Floyd community. She also discussed the new free monthly print edition, which supplements the original online newspaper. The August edition is available now at select locations throughout the county. Abby also shared the variety of content available to readers and ways the community can support the Floyd Times and local journalism.

Thank you, Abby!

Additional Floyd Rotary members - Duane McIntyre and Gary Stone - were recently recognized with their Multiple Paul Harris Fellow pins. The blue sapphire stone on their pins reflects reaching the PHF+1 level, marking their second major milestone of cumulative support to the Rotary Foundation. These steady contributions over time are the lifeblood of Rotary's global initiatives, helping to eradicate polio, provide clean water, support education, and fostering world peace. Congratulations!

At our last meeting in July, Floyd Initiative for Safe Housing • FISH representatives, Susan Icove (co-founder) and Schulyer Mills (Repairs Coordinator) came to discuss a project that our club is supporting with club funds matched by a Rotary International grant along with providing hands on support. We plan to help FISH complete this project in September.

Last week, the Rotary Club of Floyd County welcomed new Floyd Rotary member, Jack Wall, as our guest speaker. Jack is the co-founder of Wall Residences, which he established with his wife, Kamala Bauers, in 1995 to provide supportive residential services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Jack shared the story behind the creation and growth of Wall Residences, discussed the ongoing need for quality housing and support services, and explained the person-centered approach the organization uses to help residents live as independently as possible while receiving the assistance they need with daily living activities.

He also spoke about the importance of creating safe, stable, and supportive home environments where residents can build meaningful relationships, participate in their communities, and enjoy a high quality of life.

We appreciate Jack taking the time to share the important work being done by Wall Residences and the positive impact it has on the lives of residents and their families.

Floyd Rotary's Dog Show raised $561 toward a future dog park in Floyd County! While there are currently no plans in place for a dog park, these funds will help build a foundation should the community decide to pursue one in the future.

Thank you to everyone who entered their dogs, attended as spectators, volunteered, and helped make the event a success. We enjoyed seeing so many wonderful dogs and their owners come together for a fun afternoon.

The dog show results are included in this post. Congratulations to all of our participants and winners!
