Last Tuesday evening, after a 3 year battle against Cancer, my mom passed away.
She always had the biggest smile.
She loved meeting people, teaching sign language, traveling, the Bible, sweets, and her friends & family. She loved sharing the Bible, whether it was teaching or just discussing.
She was a beloved daughter, sister, niece, mother, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother. And she was smart! Boy was my mom smart, and funny, and clever (because there’s a difference).
If she did anything bad, it was that she loved too much, too long, the wrong men.
She went to the School for the Deaf in Nebraska & Berkeley. She made lifelong friends at school. She worked for the Federal Government - BLM, in Sacramento and TSHA in Oklahoma.
She loved music, plays, cards, bourbon, margaritas, the ocean, her Sisters in Christ, and dancing. She could sew, crochet, needlepoint, quilt, ALL of it. She was incredibly talented.
Although my Mom was deaf, she could speak well, and she was an amazing lip-reader.
My mom was fun. She laughed, a lot! She giggled. And she flirted!!!
We did not always agree, or get-along. She lived with me for the last 3 years and sometimes I felt like I had to drag her to chemotherapy, to eat, to walk.
What was so clear to me, was not to Mom.
Our memories were different. I’m working on giving myself grace.
We knew it was coming, we’d known that CanCer was going to eventually win…we just didn’t expect it to be now.
We were in the hospital for 5 weeks…4 of those weeks we were working on building up strength & endurance to start our 3rd round of chemotherapy & to come home. And then it all changed, and we were in ICU discussing Comfort Care.
I need to sit with that for a bit because I was not ready.
I’m grateful for those who were there.
I miss her.
