So many fall colors available right now, our post today focuses on our gorgeous and bee loving red Shrimp Plants. The bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies love these and we can definitely see why! Aren’t they beautiful?!? I was able to capture a honeybee doing its thing and giving a definite thumbs up as I was walking through the blooms. Full sun and hardy to our zones, these shrimps are full of attitude!

Some of the most popular plants being sold in Louisiana these days are Encore azaleas.

These multiseasonal blooming azaleas debuted in the late 1990s and have tendencies to bloom during spring, summer and fall.

Azaleas perform best in full sun to light, filtered shade. At least four to six hours of direct sunlight per day are required for good flowering. Too much shade, however, can result in skipped or significantly reduced bloom cycles.
Water azaleas well when you first plant them and keep the soil moist but never wet. Newly planted azaleas will die quickly if the soil dries excessively.

We are in the prime months for planting azaleas. Encores do best when planted during the fall. Garden centers have the most azaleas available in spring, but fall is the best time for planting to help the plants get established in the landscape. New roots produced in the fall will help the azalea flourish during the next growing season.

Although less watering is necessary now, don’t allow the roots to become dry. A 2- to 3-inch layer of pine straw is an excellent mulch material and will aid in w**d suppression.

There are always questions about when to prune the multiseasonal blooming azaleas. Most require very little pruning to retain good form and do not need "dead-heading." If you think your azaleas need pruning, do so immediately – or within a month – after spring flowering for maximum bud set. Light pruning of established plants will stimulate growth and flowering.

Encore azaleas are great plants for Louisiana landscapes. These varieties offer more flower colors now than when the first few varieties were released. You can find reds, oranges, pinks, blushes, whites, bicolors, lavenders and others.

Our Confederate Rose are full of buds and the blooms have just started opening up. They are loving the mornings with cooler temps. Despite its common name, it is actually a member of the mallow family (Malvaceae) and a species of hibiscus. The best place to plant a Confederate rose (Hibiscus mutabilis) is an open, sunny spot in your yard with plenty of room to grow, such as a free-standing specimen location in the front yard or a mixed shrub border. Give them space as they can reach between 5 and 15 feet tall, though it can occasionally reach up to 20 feet or more in optimal conditions as a large shrub or small tree.

🐝 🌼 🌸 Sometimes you just need to slow down, stop and smell the flowers… and maybe say hello to the little fuzzy buzzers making it all possible! 💛🐝 this post celebrates not only our bees, but also our LSU AgCenter recommended Louisiana Super Plant, the gorgeous Shoal Creek Vitex. Nature has a way of reminding us to pause and appreciate the little things. Without these hardworking, beautiful bees, our gardens wouldn’t be nearly as colorful or full of life. So take a moment, soak up the sunshine, enjoy the blooms, and give a little love to our favorite pollinators! 🌼🌿🐝

Fall is here, well sort of…nothing says fall like our ornamental grasses swishing in the wind! These purple fountain grass are absolutely gorgeous and really bring a pop to landscapes and planters. Such an amazing addition with it vibrant colors and fun wispy textures!

The Doug Young Memorial Golf Tournament was created to honor and celebrate the life of Doug Young and his strong belief in the importance of education. Doug began his college education in 1961, the very first year Louisiana State University at Alexandria opened, and he believed that education broadened your outlook on life and taught you to think for yourself. Today, that belief continues through a very special legacy. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the scholarship fund at LSUA, helping local students pursuing an education in horticulture or science. Seeing these funds help students further their education is what makes this tournament so meaningful to us. We couldn't ask for a better way to remember Doug—a great day of golf, fellowship, laughter, and giving back to our community.

Did someone say Eucalyptus?!? Our fall crop of Silver Dollar Eucalyptus is ready and the smell is intoxicating! These beautiful trees are great for well drained, sunny areas and grow rapidly. The blue-green foliage of eucalyptus is also a favorite for flower arrangements and adds gorgeous texture to gardens. Hardiness zones 8-11.
