Lately I find many are misinformed and ask questions about Red Tide and are confusing this year's seaweed (saragassum) problem with it. To further add to the confusion the seaweed that we get on our beaches is often red.

As for Red Tide please use this map which is updated daily. Fortunately at the current time Red Tide is not present anywhere in the state.

As noted by many seaweed has been a problem on Ft. Myers Beach this year as it is unsightly and can smell. While naturally occurring, the abundance this year is a result of the major Red Tide outbreak last year. Red Tide chokes out oxygen to marine life including many microorganisms that feed on seaweed. The absence of these organisms essentially allowed seaweed to grow unchecked causing an above normal amount. Ocean currents and changes to weather naturally cause the seaweed to break free from the gulf floor and we are left with what washes up. This year is just a lot more than normal because of last year's Red Tide.
