Today is a prep day - we are prepping 6 pieces for shipping pick up and they are all going to different parts of the country.

An English pine barrel backed corner cabinet off to North Carolina, a cricket table to Minnesota, a chest of drawers to Oregon, a pine dresser and oak console to Pennsylvania and a stunning Irish pine dresser to Rotonda West.

Each one hand selected by us in England, expertly restored in our Ft Myers workshop and now on their way to their next chapter.

The last few days have taken shape as a much needed break to step away and be. We took ourselves off to Sanibel for morning bike rides, afternoon ice creams, poolside reads and beach strolls. We visited some of our favorite shops on the island...took in the soothing vibes CĒLĒBRER - Design Studio , the delightful surroundings Nanny’s of Sanibel and picked up some great new reads MacIntosh Books + Paper . We caught a (maybe too close up) sighting of coyotes frolicking, soaked up some of the best marina views Gramma dots Seaside Saloon and explored the newly revamped and frankly spectacular Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium Golly are we ever rested and refreshed. One of the questions we are asked most often is how we decide what comes back with us from England.

The truth is, there isn't a checklist.

Sometimes it's the craftsmanship.

Sometimes it's the proportions.

Sometimes it's simply a feeling that the piece has so much more life to live.

If we could only buy one category of furniture again and again, it might be an English pine chest of drawers.

Not because they are grand.

Not because they are rare.

But because they work.

For generations, pine chests were hardworking pieces of everyday furniture — built to be used, repaired when needed, and lived with for decades.

Today, they feel just as relevant.

A good pine chest brings warmth to a room, useful storage to everyday life, and a sense of history without ever feeling precious.

Perhaps what we love most is that no two are quite the same.

The knots in the timber, the wear around the handles, the marks left behind by years of use — all reminders that these pieces have already lived full lives before finding their way to us.

And somehow, they always seem to make a house feel a little more like home.

For designers, sourcing antiques is about more than finding beautiful pieces.

It’s about finding pieces you can trust.

Every antique we offer is hand-selected in England through years of relationships with trusted dealers and sources across the country.

But our role doesn’t end when the container arrives.

Before a piece reaches the shop floor, our online catalogue, or a designer’s project, it passes through our workshop, where it is carefully assessed and prepared for modern use under Richard’s experienced eye.

The goal is never to make antiques look new.

It is to preserve their character while ensuring they are ready to be lived with and enjoyed for years to come.

For local designers, we offer private appointments and access to inventory beyond the shop floor.

For designers further afield, our online catalogue and trade program provide access to the same thoughtfully sourced and carefully prepared pieces.

Welcome to Workshop Wednesday.

Over the years, many of you have asked what happens after our antiques arrive from England and before they reach the shop floor.

The answer is: the workshop.

Every piece spends time here being carefully assessed, cleaned, conditioned, adjusted, and prepared for modern use.

That is where Richard’s expertise becomes invaluable.

Long before a piece is photographed or offered for sale, he is testing drawers, checking joins, assessing old repairs, inspecting hardware, and determining what should be repaired, what should be preserved, and what should be left exactly as it is.

Because our goal has never been to make antiques look new.

It is to honor their story and craftsmanship while ensuring they are ready for another lifetime of use.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be taking you behind the scenes of the workshop, sharing the process, the decisions, and the details most people never see.

And we’d love to hear from you.

Not every repair is dramatic.

In fact, many of the most important ones are the details most people don't necessarily address.

This mahogany chest of drawers was already a wonderful piece. Strong, beautiful, and full of character. But the back panels weren't quite right.

For us, that matters.

Before a piece reaches the shop floor, Richard goes through it carefully, looking not only at what is visible, but what is underneath, behind, and often overlooked.

In this case, that meant repairing gaps in the back panels and bringing the construction back into proper order.

It is a small detail in the grand scheme of things.

But it is also exactly the sort of thing that separates a piece that merely looks good from one that is genuinely ready for another lifetime of use.

Because for us, the goal has never been to make antiques look new.

It is to make sure they are right.

One of the things we have come to appreciate most since opening our shop is the community of small businesses that surrounds us.

One of the biggest surprises of this business has been discovering how much collaboration matters.

When we first opened Dolly Archer, we imagined spending our days thinking about antiques.

What we didn't anticipate was how many meaningful relationships would grow from this work.

Some of the people who have encouraged us most, shared ideas most freely, celebrated our successes most enthusiastically, and offered support during difficult moments have been fellow dealers.

People whose aesthetics are different from ours.

People serving different customers.

People building businesses in their own unique way.

And yet, they have become friends, collaborators, trusted sounding boards, and some of our biggest champions.

This post is a small thank you to a few of those people.

The antiques world is better when knowledge is shared.

People often ask us where they should go antiquing in the UK.

And while wonderful pieces certainly matter, we have always believed the people matter just as much.

Over the years, some of the greatest joys of sourcing in the UK have come not simply from the antiques we have found, but from the relationships formed along the way — the cups of tea, early mornings, long conversations, shared knowledge, and years of returning.

These are a few dealers we always recommend, not only because of what they source, but because they are genuinely lovely people who make the experience of antiquing in the UK feel deeply special.







Each with entirely different aesthetics and spaces of their own, yet all warm, welcoming, knowledgeable, and deeply rooted in the world of UK antiques.
