With over 40 years of personal collecting experience, my passion has always been rooted in educating others about personal wealth, history, and the joy of collecting. As a retired U.S. Navy veteran, I’ve naturally developed extensive knowledge in both U.S. and foreign coins and currency, which has grown into a broader appreciation for Americana items. Monday through Thursday may be our “closed” days, but that definitely doesn’t mean nothing is happening at Americana Coins & Currency!

We’re sorting, researching, pricing, and working our way through new inventory so there’s always something interesting waiting in the cases when Friday rolls around.
Silver, vintage U.S. coins, paper currency, gold, and plenty of pieces that make us stop and take a second look ourselves, you never quite know what’s going to come across the counter next. ✨

The wartime coin that changed American money forever. 📜✨

Take a look at your pocket change today, and you’ll see the motto "In God We Trust." But did you know it didn’t appear on any U.S. circulating coin until 1864?

During the dark and uncertain days of the American Civil War, religious sentiment surged across the country. Citizens wrote heartfelt letters to Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase urging him to recognize the nation's faith on our currency.

The Mint took action, introducing a brand-new denomination: the bronze Two-Cent Piece of 1864. Designed by James B. Longacre, the coin featured a patriotic shield flanked by laurel branches and an arched scroll proudly bearing the phrase: "IN GOD WE TRUST".

Though the two-cent denomination only lasted until 1873, that historic scroll set a precedent that remains etched onto billions of coins across the world today!

Happy Johnny Appleseed Day! Today marks the birth of John Chapman (born September 26, 1774), the legendary nurseryman who walked across early America, establishing apple orchards.

While legend remembers the tin hat, history remembers the real frontier: rugged homesteaders, barter economies, and the coins that made America grow. As early pioneers pushed westward through Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, standard U.S. Mint silver was hard to come by in wilderness settlements. Everyday trade ran on copper Large Cents, Half Cents, local merchant scrip, and privately issued trade tokens!

Holding an early 1800s copper coin or pioneer token is holding the exact metal that traded hands in frontier trading posts, blacksmith shops, and early general stores.

🧤 Handle With Care: How Do You Hold a Piece of History? 🪙

When it comes to collectible coins, one fingerprint can last a lifetime.

The natural oils, moisture, and acids on our hands can react with copper, silver, and especially delicate proof surfaces. Over time, fingerprints can cause toning, spotting, cloudiness, and even permanent surface damage—all of which can affect a coin’s eye appeal and value.

So before picking up that Morgan dollar or shiny proof, remember a few simple rules:

🪙 Hold it by the edges.
Never place your fingers directly on the obverse or reverse. Hold a raw coin gently between your thumb and forefinger along the rim.

🧤 Use gloves when appropriate.
Clean, powder-free nitrile gloves can provide extra protection when handling valuable raw coins. Cotton gloves are also commonly used, but they can be slippery so be extra careful!

✨ Give yourself a soft landing.
Examine coins over a velvet pad, soft tray, or other clean surface. One accidental drop onto a hard counter can mean a new rim ding.

And remember: never clean a collectible coin to remove a fingerprint or spot. What looks like an easy fix can permanently damage the surface and significantly reduce its numismatic value.

Happy First Day of Autumn! While Florida might take its time cooling down, the change of seasons is the perfect reminder to take stock of the treasures that never lose their warmth.
