DOOM PATROL | PART 2 🌀

Derek and Almon go deeper into Doom Patrol and why the team can feel like a much darker reflection of the X-Men.

In the 1960s, the similarities were hard to miss: a group of outsiders, led by a man in a wheelchair, sent on dangerous missions while struggling to find their place in the world.

Then Grant Morrison got involved.

Morrison took what had become a fading superhero team and pushed Doom Patrol into the surreal, psychological, and deeply strange territory that would come to define it.

But there’s a darker layer underneath it all.

What happens when the person giving broken people purpose is actually using their brokenness to control them?

The conversation turns to the revelation surrounding Doom Patrol’s leader, The Chief, and his willingness to manipulate people who are vulnerable, isolated, and searching for direction.

And it raises an uncomfortable question about superhero teams in general: viewed outside the colorful pages of a comic, how different is that from Professor X recruiting young outsiders and sending them to fight threats capable of ending the world?

Maybe the strangest thing about Doom Patrol isn’t its surrealism.

Maybe it’s how recognizable some of its ideas become when you strip the superhero fantasy away. 🌀

DOOM PATROL | PART 1 🌀

Derek and Almon dive into Doom Patrol and the Grant Morrison run that helped redefine the team into one of DC’s strangest, most conceptual corners.

Morrison’s late ’80s/early ’90s run leaned heavily into surrealism, philosophy, and ideas that stretched what a superhero comic could be. Sometimes the enemy wasn’t simply a villain you could punch. The conflict could be an idea, an ideology, or reality itself.

Think “psychedelic X-Men.” 🌀

While the X-Men are united by the mutant gene, Doom Patrol is made up of people whose extraordinary abilities often came from terrible, life-altering circumstances. Their powers aren’t always gifts. Sometimes they’re the aftermath.

And here’s where comic history gets interesting: Doom Patrol and X-Men debuted within months of each other in 1963, with striking similarities between the two concepts. That coincidence has fueled decades of debate over who influenced whom, although X-Men ultimately became the far bigger mainstream phenomenon.

For Almon, Grant Morrison’s involvement was enough to reignite his interest but it also raises a bigger question: Why aren’t DC and Marvel consistently putting their most ambitious creators behind bold, major series?

While DC’s Next Level is moving in the right direction, readers still want high-profile talent, fresh ideas and stories that feel important enough to collect again.
