New to ba****ck riding? Let's talk about the two pieces of protective gear every beginner must have, and why one of them deserves more attention than it usually gets.

βœ… Helmet: Non-negotiable, full stop.
βœ… Vest: This is where most beginners get it wrong.

The biggest difference between safety vests comes down to one thing: arm hole size.

1. Bronc riding calls for a vest with LARGER arm holes. Freedom of arm movement isn't a luxury; it's what keeps you safe when things go sideways on a bronc.

2. Bull riding is a different story. Smaller arm holes are more appropriate because extensive arm movement simply isn't part of the discipline the same way.

The wrong vest for the wrong event can limit your movement at exactly the wrong moment. We are here to make sure that never happens to you.

How should your Phoenix vest fit?

It comes down to three key adjustments:

β€’ Set the height so it sits above your belt and doesn’t limit mobility
β€’ Tighten the center to pull the vest into your core for support
β€’ Adjust both sides to remove slack and secure the fit

A properly fitted vest stays in place and moves with you when it matters most.

Bull riding ropes aren't all the same, and choosing the wrong one can make an already tough ride even harder.

1. Brazilian Style: The tail pulls from the same side as your riding hand. If the bull spins right, it pulls you toward the tail and slightly to the outside.

2. American Style: The tail pulls from the opposite side of your hand, drawing you toward the inside of the bull.

3. Tail Width: Common options are 3/4 and 7/8 β€” the 3/4 is noticeably thinner and feels very different in your grip.

4. Bottom line: The right rope is the one that feels most natural and comfortable in your hand.

Understanding your gear is step one. Rodeo Mart is here for every step after that.

Custom gloves look cool. But are they right for YOU right now? Let's be honest about it. 🧀

Here's the truth every new rider should hear:

Off-the-shelf gloves are excellent for beginners, full stop. Yes, they're easier to get hung up on. And that's exactly why beginners should start there. You need to learn how to handle that situation BEFORE you move to a glove that performs at a higher level.

Don't get too deep too fast with your equipment. Build the skill first. Once you've got the experience and the confidence to manage being hung up on, then custom gloves make sense.

Earn the upgrade. 🀠

If you're a new rider asking "What spurs do I need?", this one's for you.

1. Spur length is personal preference. Your riding style determines what works, whether you use your knees more or naturally turn your feet out further.

2. There are at least 4 different rowel types, each offering different grip levels.

3. The larger the rowel, the more grip it provides.

4. If you're competing in PBR, the PBR rowel is a mandatory requirement β€” not optional.

This is something every rider, beginner or experienced, should take seriously.

When should you replace your helmet?

1. After any significant impact, even with no visible damage. Hard hits create internal cracks you can't see with your eyes.

2. If the internal structure is compromised, your helmet could completely fail the next time it's hit.

3. If your helmet never fit correctly to begin with, a poor fit means poor protection.

Don't reuse a helmet because "it looks fine." Protect your head, protect your career.

Is your saddle pad causing problems?

Always check for clearance at the withers and along the spine before and after tightening the girth. A properly adjusted pad prevents discomfort and injury.
