How Do You Know Your Used Electronics Won’t Cost You in the end?
$100 million. That's about what Morgan Stanley paid for trusting the wrong partner with their old servers.

In October 2020, Morgan Stanley agreed to pay a $60 million civil fine to resolve U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency accusations concerning the incidents, including that its information security practices were unsafe or unsound. Then, in 2022, the SEC fined Morgan Stanley $35 million after discovering their decommissioned servers, complete with unencrypted data from 15 million customers, ended up for sale on internet auction sites. The financial giant had hired a moving company with no electronics handling experience to decommission their data centers. That company then hired another unqualified subcontractor, who sold the equipment to a third party. The servers, still containing wealth management client data, eventually appeared online with Morgan Stanley's data intact.

For now, you can breathe a sigh of relief that it wasn't your company. But what about those old laptops in your storage closet? The servers scheduled for decommissioning next quarter? The returned devices piling up in your warehouse? How do you know they won't become your $35 million headline?

Got old electronics hiding in closets, drawers, or that one “mystery” box in the garage?
Set them free on Saturday, June 6th!
Join us at the Jackson Lehman Family YMCA in the south parking lot from 9:00 AM–12:00 PM for a morning of responsible recycling, community impact, and good vibes.
✨ Why show up?
Because recycling feels good…
But recycling and supporting the YMCA feels even better!
A portion of the profits from this event will be donated directly to the Jackson Lehman Family YMCA, helping fuel programs that strengthen our community.
Bring anything with a plug, battery, or power source — we’ll take it off your hands and keep it out of the landfill.
