On the last Sunday in September, Gold Star Mother’s and Family Day honors the mothers, fathers, and families of fallen military service members. Also known as National Gold Star Mother’s Day, the day serves as a reminder of the losses suffered by military families.
Our military families never forget their sons and daughters. On Gold Star Mother's Day, the nation remembers alongside them. It's an opportunity for us to pay tribute to their sacrifices and support those who remain behind.
The history of National Gold Star Mother’s Day and their families begins with a young country thrown in the midst of a great war. Army Captain Robert L. Queissner, whose two sons were serving on the front line during World War I, created what is now called the Service Flag. Families displayed the flag with a blue star to represent a child serving in the military during times of war or hostilities. When a service member died, families stitched a gold star over the blue star.

The U.S. Air Force was officially established on September 18, 1947, and has since proven itself as an unrivaled force in aviation. However, its roots extend back to the early 20th century, reflecting a rich history and heritage.
Between 1909 -- when that the US military purchased its first aircraft -- and 1947, the U.S. Air Force did not exist as a separate and independent military service organization. It went through a series of designations: Aeronautical Section, Signal Corps (1909); Aviation Section, Signal Corps (1914); United States Army Air Service (1918); United States Army Air Corps (1926), and United States Army Air Forces (1941).
In 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act, which not only established this new defense organization but also marked the formal creation of the U.S. Air Force as a separate and independent service branch.

In the United States, the third Friday in September honors National POW/MIA Recognition Day. The day serves as a call to action, reminding the nation to rededicate our efforts.
Every year since 1989, a presidential proclamation brings the nation together to remember and honor the members of the Armed Forces who remain missing in action or are prisoners of war. We're responsible for bringing our patriots home and for caring for our military families awaiting word of their loved ones.

On September 13, the United States recognizes Uncle Sam Day to commemorate Sam Wilson, the man behind the iconic image and fascinating nickname for the United States government who was born on September 13, 1766.
Sam Wilson was a meat packer from New York who was born on September 12, 1766. He is known for supplying barrels of meat to soldiers during the war of 1812. To identify the meat for shipment, Wilson prominently stamped "U.S." on the barrels. It wasn't long before the soldiers dubbed the grub a delivery from Uncle Sam. As such nicknames tend to do, its popularity spread.

Sept. 11, 2001, changed more than the skyline of New York City - the attacks changed a generation of Americans, our Military and our world. That day's destruction and devastation did not condemn this country to a future filled with fear. No, this loss, as profound as it was, did not break the soul of this nation. It made us stronger. That day fortified Americans with pride and patriotism and created a spirit of service in the hearts of a new generation. That day fundamentally changed our nation and our Military for the better. We now observe Patriot Day annually on September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance for the thousands of lives lost in the 9/11 attacks.

The Marine Forces Reserve (also known as the United States Marine Corps Reserve or the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Reserve) was created in 1916, in conjunction with the creation of the Navy Reserve. Since then, the evolution of this force would expand from just thirty-five to today’s roughly 40,000 Marine Corps Reservists. The Marine Corps Reserve Birthday is observed every year on the 29th of August.
The Marine Forces Reserve is tasked with the mission of augmenting and reinforcing active duty Marine forces during a war or open hostilities, national emergencies, and contingency operations. The Marine Corps Reserve also relieves active duty forces in peacetime missions and offers service to the community.

On August 16, 1940, 48 volunteer members of the U.S. Army Parachute Test Platoon performed the first official U.S. military parachute jump at Fort Benning, Georgia. Today, the date is celebrated as National Airborne Day, a day to honor the U.S. Airborne Forces.

After the first jump, a large force of more 100,000 paratroopers was formed and assigned to the 11th 13th, 17th, 82d, and 101st Airborne Divisions, which fought in every theater during World War II, according to the Department of Defense. Parachutes were an innovative technique used by the Allied Forces, enabling them to deploy troops behind enemy lines. Parachute assaults were key to the US military’s success in the battles for Sicily, Salerno, and D-Day. During the operation into Holland in September, 1944, the airborne forces secured all of their objectives.

In 2002, President George W. Bush proclaimed August 16 to be National Airborne Day stating: “Airborne combat continues to be driven by the bravery and daring spirit of sky Soldiers. Often called into action with little notice, these forces have earned an enduring reputation for dedication, excellence, and honor. As we face the challenges of a new era, I encourage all people to recognize the contributions of these courageous Soldiers to our Nation and the world.”

August 14 to honor the brave Native American Marines who used the Diné language to create an unbreakable military code during World War II. President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed the day in 1982.
n 1942, 29 Navajo marines (known as ‘the Original 29’) encrypted their Native language to provide fast and secure communications during World War II. They were commended for their skill, speed, and accuracy. The ‘Original 29’ and nearly 400 other Navajo Code Talkers are credited with helping the United States win World War II.

Major Howard Connor had 6 Navajo Code Talkers working 24/7 during the first two days of the Battle of Iwo Jima. They sent and received over 800 messages, all without error. Connor stated, “Were it not for the Navajo, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima.” ¹
Unbroken Record: Enemy forces never decoded the messages, saving thousands of American lives in the Pacific theater.
