Hitting the shelves in the shop this week we got a hold of some copies of the "Heavy Metal Magazine Fall Special 1998", an all Richard Corben issue collecting his stories from Creepy and Eerie Magazine - the "Heavy Metal 30th Anniversary Special" featuring a full issue of Kevin Eastman and Simon Bisley's "Melting Pot" - and the July 1995 issue featuring Alejandro Jodorowsky and the late Juan Gimenez on the Metabaron as well as work from Prado, Bisley, Dave Cooper and more. - also put together Wizard issue 21 featuring interviews with Rob Liefeld and Jae Lee (among others) with copies of comics of the era by both. There's also a great Cartoonist Kayfabe episode on this issue of Wizard magazine that rules - and "Rock and Roll Comics" #52 featuring Bob Dylan. Rock and Roll comics was a crazy exploitation publisher in the 80's and their story is pretty crazy and ends in publisher Todd Loren's murder. As a kid, i would only ever see these in the Heavy Metal music booth at " Traders Village", a mega flea market in town. Wild stuff.

Watching this excellent shoot interview with on the .kayfabe youtube channel and as a comic stand located inside of a plant shop, i would be remiss if i didn't tell you that we currently have not only Tomine's "Optic Nerve" #1 and #2 for sale in the shop right now, but also the lovely "Triostar Stromanthe" plant that is next to him!

Optic Nerve 1 and 2 are early works from Tomine and while its certainly not as polished as he would become, its still astoundingly strong and clear evidence of why his name holds such regard in the indie comics world. And since these are actual comics from the mid 90's (as opposed to being a collected edition) you get a letters column, ads and the other assorted time capsule radness that only an actual issue can offer!

The "Triostar Stromanthe" is a great plant too. Striking color, pretty basic care and its leaves move around following the sun. Good stuff, get some green in your life along with your comics.

Watch the interview on Cartoonist Kayfabe's Youtube Channel and subscribe while your there, theyre the best comics content around. And pick up Adrian's new book " The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist" as well, its great!

Conan the Barbarian issue #104 - Roy Thomas wrote it with "Big" John Buscema and Ernie Chan listed as Illustrators/Innovators, Ben Sean on colors.

They deliver the goods. Fire, swords, winged beast, life or death struggle and hard knuckled triumph and Buscema's thick, ripped barbarian. In 1979 you could have bought this off the rack at 7-11 for 40 cents.

"Debbie's Inferno" by Anne Emond. Debbie hangs with her cat and somehow finds herself traveling through an inferno of her own.

I like Emond's "line" a lot. Its uniform for the most part but still way energetic and when she chooses to bring a lot of black onto the page you really feel it. Good stuff.

Pretty perfect Spidey splash page by Klaus Janson from Amazing Spiderman Annual 2000 written by Howard Mackie. I love the scale Janson conveys here, Spideys just a dude on a water tower, on one building amongst all the skyscrapers.

When we lived in NY id often think about how Spidey would actually look swinging and crawling around ( id also think about Godzilla and King Kong in that way too!) This doesn't show that necessarily, but it does give the city the massive presence that it deserves and to me, reinforces the "friendly neighborhood" aspect of Spiderman. You don't really get that in one of those super close up shots of Spidey swinging through the air with some vaguely building shaped things behind him - which is totally cool and everything - but this is so much more engaging to me. And the fact that Janson can do all this while still giving half of the page over to the credits box which he's incorporated as a billboard just goes to show what a beast of a cartoonist he is. Great cover by Janson as well!

This comic just went out for at the shop, complete with a free bonus Spidey book so go score it and follow
