🔍 Corrosion Vocabulary: PITTING CORROSION 🔍

Small surface defect. Big potential problem.

Pitting corrosion is a localized form of corrosion that creates small cavities, or "pits," in a metal surface.

Because pits can be difficult to detect and may pe*****te deeply into the material, they can become a serious maintenance concern.

Regular inspection and effective corrosion prevention strategies are key to identifying and addressing corrosion before it becomes a bigger problem.

Product Spotlight: Ox-Block™ Corrosion Inhibiting Compound

Av-DEC Ox-Block is a general-purpose, non-hardening, corrosion-inhibiting compound for aerospace applications. Ox-Block provides an environmental barrier to prevent electrolyte intrusion. In addition, Ox-Block contains sacrificial particles that preferentially oxidize before the aircraft structure and provide increased galvanic protection to prevent corrosion at fastener locations. These properties enable Ox-Block to provide superior corrosion protection, which minimizes aircraft maintenance and downtime.

⚡ Corrosion Vocabulary: GALVANIC CORROSION ⚡

Ever heard someone mention galvanic corrosion and wondered what it means?

Galvanic corrosion occurs when two dissimilar metals are in contact with each other in the presence of an electrolyte, such as moisture. The result? One metal can begin to corrode more rapidly than it otherwise would.

In aircraft, proper material selection, isolation, surface protection, and sealing can all play a role in reducing the risk.

Understanding the terminology is an important part of understanding the corrosion problem.

Application Spotlight: Self-Leveling® Green for Sealing Floor Panel Seams

Av-DEC Self-Leveling Green is a two-component, fast-curing, polyurethane sealant that easily fills gaps and voids between surfaces, such as floor panel seams, creating a flexible, watertight environmental seal.

Hidden Corrosion. Real System Failures.

From the outside, this connector looked corrosion-free. The OEM sealing boot appeared to be protecting the connector from moisture and contaminants. But after system faults began occurring, technicians cut open the boots—and discovered extensive hidden corrosion.

The connector/feed-through is plated aluminum, while the braided sock is silver- or tin-plated copper, grounded with a stainless-steel Band-It clamp. Add moisture to this combination, and you create the conditions for a galvanic cell. Moisture can wick between the wires and become trapped at the connector base, allowing corrosion to develop unnoticed.
