Ancient Roman soldiers were paid a salarium, or salary, meaning money used to buy salt. A soldier’s salary was cut if he “was not worth his salt.”

Before the days of artificial refrigeration, the main method for preserving food was to treat it with salt. Humans have used salt to preserve food since prehistoric times, especially for meat and seafood. Salt absorbs the water needed by the harmful microbes that cause food spoilage, thus limiting their growth. In this way, salt came to represent power; without it, armies couldn’t travel great distances and explorers couldn’t sail to new lands because their provisions would spoil. Salt was essential to the survival of humans. “A grain of salt” may be a recipe for skepticism, but there can be no doubt about how salt has seasoned history.

The first dime, the Draped Bust Dime, was minted in 1796. The design features Liberty with her neckline covered in drapery on the obverse and a small eagle surrounded by a wreath on the reverse. This dime did not have the denomination on the coin. The word dime comes from the Old French disme, meaning "tithe" or "tenth part", from the Latin decima. The one trillion mark coin is the product of the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic. It is important to remember that the German “billion” is actually equal to the English trillion. Struck from a copper-nickel-zinc alloy called neusilber, only 11,113 pieces were minted, making it relatively difficult for modern collectors to obtain an example.
