Monkey and Dog serves as a place for children to find, read, and talk about their favorite books. Doing our part to encourage the next generation of readers, we have carefully chosen books from national and state reading awards lists, from teachers' and counselors' recommendations, and from a life-long voracious reader's favorites. We prescribe NOT to the pedagogic view of making learning fun, but rather that learning IS fun, challenging, and joyful. Catering specifically to the individuality of each reader's interests, we make recommendations to help readers pursue their interests and discover new ones.

**New Book Club Alert!**

If mysteries and thrillers are your go-to reads, then Bloodhounds and Bookhounds, our newest book club is the club for you! From classic crime fiction to contemporary thrillers, this club offers a wide range of page turning reads sure to keep you reading late into the night.

Our first selection is The Bishop Murder Case by S. S. Van Dine. In one of the most well-known classic American murder mysteries, amateur detective Philo Vance must solve a puzzle series of crimes based on nursery rhymes.

When C**k Robin is found dead with an arrow through his chest, New York's DA calls in amateur detective and professional flâneur Philo Vance to solve the case. But this mystery proves to be more challenging than Vance could have imagined, and a cunning presence seems to be constantly one step ahead of him. As Vance investigates, more gruesome murders occur, and a sinister pattern begins to emerge: each perverse death is staged to represent a line from a nursery rhyme.

In an even more disturbing twist, after each murder, the perpetrator sends a note to the press, signed simply 'The Bishop.' As more deaths go unsolved, the murderer’s hubris grows, and each act is more brazen than the last. Vance must move quickly to stop the Bishop's bloody spree among the upper echelons of New York society.

Set against the glittering backdrop of Jazz Age Manhattan with a distinctive and erudite detective, this is considered one of the great classic detective stories. This intricate and skillfully crafted murder mystery is sure to delight any armchair detective.

Our Third Thursday Book Club is reading Frankenstein by Mary Shelley as their October selection. The most famous horror story in world literature—the original tale of a mad scientist and his monster—is also a profoundly moving masterpiece.

The book follows the story of Victor Frankenstein and his monster: the result of his desire to create life. But his botched experiment is so grotesque that the doctor immediately regrets what he has done and abandons the monster, leaving him to fend for himself. The creature finds and confronts his maker pleading for a companion – his human right to happiness. Fearing what this may lead to, Victor refuses, causing the monster to vow to ruin any happiness in Victor’s life.

A tragedy and a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of ambition and creation, Mary Shelley’s masterpiece is more relevant now than ever.

We are excited to welcome author Cassi McCreight to the shop on Saturday, September 26th at 10:30 for a special Storytime with the Author event. Cassi will be here to read and sign copies of her delightful picture book, But Art is Awful.

Art can be a lot of things—wondrous, inspiring, transformative . . . but mostly it’s boring!

And visiting an art museum? Double boring! Come along with a curmudgeonly young boy—who’s more interested in finger painting his cat than “admiring art”—as he’s taken to the local museum by his well-meaning mother.

Seriously, what’s so great about scribbles and squares and dots? OK, sure, that portrait made of cubes is kind of cool. And those sculptures made of clay are pretty awesome . . . Gasp! Maybe he does like art after all?! Well, would that be so awful?

With nods to famous artists and art movements on every page, and back matter explaining each movement through a kid-friendly voice, young readers will soon find themselves eager to visit their local art museum or make masterpieces of their own. Be sure to join us for this special storytime event!
