Sadly, I've received word that our good friend and CHILLER THEATRE founder Kevin Clement has passed.
I've had the pleasure of knowing Kevin since Chiller's October 1997 show, that I had the pleasure of interviewing Sara Karloff for the release of the Universal Monsters stamps, back when I used to write for movie magazines. Chiller was my first horror con experience and I absolutely loved it, all thanks to Kevin. I later went on to become a staff member for Ron Adams' Monster Bash and then became a vendor at both Bash and Chiller. To say that Kevin had a huge influence on my life would be an understatement. As years went on, our friendship grew and we would often spend hours talking on the phone as he made the long drive home from his NJ store to his PA home, which always ended with a stop at his hometown Burger King. Those were some of the best and most enjoyable hours of my life. At times, Kevin would have me do some artwork for the Chiller con page. It always made me happy to see that they still use the gray tombstone that I once made for the page for their website R.I.P. menu board, though it has certainly gotten much longer than the one I originally did.
When the boys and I decided to give the Monster-Mania Convention a try, after years of being an online retailer, I went to Kevin to get his blessing on doing a show in NJ. He readily gave it and we repaid the honor by giving him an award at our second show, honoring all that he had done for the horror community.
Kevin and I remained friends and always stayed in touch. I had the pleasure of seeing him again at his April show this year, where he gave me a signed copy of a print of a Nosferatu painting he had done.
I had gotten word earlier this week that his health had taken a drastic turn for the worse but it still didn't prepare me for the news of his passing today. Words cannot begin to express how deeply saddened I am right now. The horror community has lost one of its Mount Rushmore people.
Rest in peace Kevin. I miss you already.
