If you’re looking for a one-stop shop to buy quality furniture, antiques, lighting, baby gifts, or perhaps a logo gift for a college football fan, take a look at The Perfect Setting, Chuck & Sheri Gordon’s magical “setting” in Grassland Village. The Gordons, originally from Mississippi, opened their first antiques store in Franklin’s The Factory before moving to The Perfect Setting 20 years ago. With their buyer John Thomas Matthews, they source southern-style merchandise from local craftsmen as well as the Dallas and Atlanta markets. The small shop is artfully designed to include an array of products from Tyler Candles, Beatriz Ball tabletop, Able Jewelry, Scout bags, Lounging accessories from Warmies and Barefoot Dreams, Musee bath bombs, scripture socks from Standing on the Word, and football fan bags and accessories from Tennessee’s own Logo Brand company. It’s all a delight to discover while chatting with the locals who frequent this store/community gathering spot. The shop is also known for its ability to monogram just about anything you want to gift, something every proper southerner should do! Don’t miss their September anniversary party, the early November open house or their enchanting Christmas season decorations with ornaments made by Tennessee artists. Also stop in for florals at Garden Delights and a cup of joe at The Good Cup, all in the same historic building at 2181 Hillsboro Road, Franklin. Driving through Franklin’s Grassland Village, near the Battleground Sonic and the Tractor Supply, it’s easy to notice a distinctive landmark building with metal green roof and outdoor bistro tables. The charm of this building is enhanced by an impressive array of colorful flowers framing the doorway of Steven McLellan’s Garden Delights Fine Florist, a shop filled with novel flowers and gifts. McLellan first came to Nashville from his native Oklahoma to attend Belmont University, and he’s been a Tennessean ever since. A lifelong flower aficionado, he opened Garden Delights in Nashville 28 years ago, then moved the shop to its permanent home on Hillsboro Road in 2000. Entering the shop feels like crossing the threshold into a fairy house wonderland. The lush look is created by McLellan and well-known designer Kris Bagbey, using nature-inspired artwork, live plants, soaps & lotions, tabletop, jewelry and vintage-style cachepots. Shoppers will find gifts and home decor by makers such as Memphis’ , personal care, .violets plants, and pebble art by Canada’s Sharon Nowlan, along with an extensive selection of high-quality silk flowers. Fresh flowers are sourced both locally and from as far away as Israel and South America. In addition to their gift and floral business, McLellan and his team have designed thousands of weddings and now focus their efforts on corporate events and private parties. Floral arrangements can be ordered in advance, delivered, or picked up last-minute from the store’s display cooler. Varieties regularly include roses in many colors, antique garden roses, hydrangea, gerbera daisies, fragrant oriental lilies, a large selection of potted orchids, and seasonal wildflowers.
Friday afternoons and all day Saturday is “Happy Flower Hour,” when individual fresh floral stems can be purchased, unarranged, for half price. Be sure and say hello to Mr. Delphinium, the store’s friendly resident cat! 2179 Hillsboro Road, Franklin. Sanctuary South, a home decor and gifts boutique on Front Street in the hopping Westhaven neighborhood of Franklin, was bought by the optimistic mother-daughter duo Melanie Johnson & Nicki J. Reeves in December of 2020. Their belief in better days to come has paid off, as they now operate a peaceful “sanctuary” full of unique gifts, furniture, chandeliers, jewelry, baby gifts, tabletop, and even an extensive selection of gifts for men. In addition to makers such as Gabby Furniture and Uttermost home decor, the shop partners with local artisans who give back to the community. For every candle sold, Clark & June candle company donates a meal for a needy child. The store also hosts a monthly “Give Back Wednesday” whereby a portion of proceeds are donated to organizations such as My Bag My Story, which provides duffel bags for children in foster care. Jennifer, the store manager, showed me so many lovely items, such as the hand painted Bible covers and Christian artwork by Kingdom HeART Designs, and jewelry by Morgan & Me, all handmade in Tennessee. The owners offer personalized design services and often find pieces for their customers that are not available in the store. Sanctuary South is also a great place to find hostess gifts or fun serve wear to spruce up your entertaining spaces. I purchased a “Woodsmoke”-scented Post Card candle from Himalayan Candle Co., a scent I had been hunting for for some time. The store is open Monday-Saturday from 10am - 5pm, and are closed on Sundays. Check out their website to see when their next wine & cheese community gathering is happening! Nashville’s historic Hillsboro Village, near Vanderbilt Medical Center, includes the famous Pancake Pantry, art house Belcourt Theater, and an outpost of the Impeccable Pig, a retail boutique started by two Dallas-based sisters in 2002. With 16 locations spread across six southern states, The Impeccable Pig prides itself on impeccable customer service and modest pricing. In addition to its namesake brand, the store also carries apparel, shoes, jewelry and handbags by brands such as Vintage Havana, Shu Shop, Soda Shoes and the wildly popular Seychelles. Pictured is the sales lead, Eades, showing some of the shop’s hot pink summer offerings, favorites of the regular grad students, tourists and local mother-daughter customers who frequent this strip of 21st Avenue. Today was one of those rainy Tennessee days when you just want to curl up with a mug of tea and a good book. I haven’t discovered a better place to find a good book than Bound Booksellers, a hidden gem tucked behind Sanctuary South on Front Street, in Westhaven’s charming retail and dining district. Tennessee native Kelly Gore opened this cozy nook in 2016, and every inch of the space is thoughtfully designed. Gore, a former professor of architecture & design (it shows!), has curated a unique collection of books for adults, teens and children, along with toys, games, puzzles, candles, Jellycat plush, “vintage blog” journals, nostalgic candy, custom stationery, and greeting cards. Walking around the space you’ll want to pick everything up. My favorite Highland Bluffs candle, “Books to the Ceiling,” was purchased here, along with a lovely home design book for imperfectionists like me called, “Wabi-Sabi Home.” Not sure what to read next? Ask booktender Amanda McCrina, a former teacher and a published novelist. She has a knack for finding just the right-themed book to gift yourself or your friends & family. The Bound book club will soon resume gathering in the shop’s tranquil courtyard, and books can also be ordered online, delivered to your home (in the neighborhood) or picked up. There’s plenty of free parking in the lot behind Front Street, and you can enter the shop through the courtyard. Oh, and for that mug of tea? Bound carries an extensive array of Harney & Sons Fine Blend tins, something you tea lovers will appreciate. Google Bound Booksellers Westhaven for hours and directions! 📚 đŸ«– Bound Booksellers
