Would you want a sign from someone you’ve lost—and would you want to hear their voice answer?

Our October Lantern Society gathering took us through Appalachian ghost stories, old death customs, and the question of why tarot feels comfortable to some people while a Ouija board doesn’t.

We talked about the Greenbrier Ghost, covered mirrors, angel crowns hidden in feather pillows, and ended with mirror scrying. There was plenty of laughter alongside the stranger stories.

A little Friday update from Cozy. 📚

I picked up Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life and proceeded to read the entire thing in one day, so obviously I had some thoughts. I wrote a new review for From the Shelves about repeated lives, half-remembered mistakes, second chances, and how changing one tiny moment can alter everything that follows.

Meanwhile, new books have been making their way onto the studio shelves this week—horror, herbalism, D&D, Astarion, and more.

I’m offering A Light on the Path, a complimentary recorded tarot reading through Cozy & Content. Bring one focused question, and I’ll create a personal 10–15 minute video reading and send it to you by email. You can watch it in your own time and return to it whenever you need to.

When I tell people that Cozy & Content will welcome visitors to a home studio, the reaction is often: “You’re inviting customers into your *home*?”

I understand the surprise. Home is personal. But it’s made me wonder when welcoming someone in started to feel so unusual.

The studio will be a place to talk and shop for books and apothecary items, practice Reiki, discuss folklore and spirits and whatever else we’re curious about, without the rush and interruptions of a storefront. Visits will be arranged, and I’ll be thoughtful about the space and the people in it. Welcome and boundaries can live together.

I wrote more about the kind of community I hope Cozy & Content can grow into in “What It Means to Be Welcomed In.”

Last night the Sci-Fi & Fantasy Book Club discussed Andy Weir's Artemis, and reviews were mixed. If you go into it expecting The Martian or Project Hail Mary, you may be disappointed in this space caper. Protagonist Jazz is super smart when the plot demands it, but seems to lack maturity and any semblance of impulse control (which sounds like a few 26-year-olds to me, but I digress).

In Appalachia, the dead were not always considered entirely gone.

Investigation Three explores Appalachian ghost stories, death omens, mourning customs, and the traditions carried into these mountains from Scotland, Ireland, and England. We’ll also consider a Cherokee journey into the land of the dead—and end the evening by darkening the room and attempting mirror scrying together.
