Long before CNC machines, lasers, and power tools, my great-grandfather worked the land on this Connecticut farm.

The tools were different. The pace was different. But the pride in creating something with your hands remains the same.

Looking through these old family photographs reminds me that craftsmanship isn't just about what we build—it's about carrying forward a tradition of hard work, patience, and care.

Some things never go out of style.

I found some old family photos today of my Great Grandfather's farm in Connecticut. "Old Lyme" Tibbals had a water-driven sawmill and produced lumber for the surrounding communities. Next to the old mill is Hall Meadow Brook, which was dammed and used to power the operation. There were plenty of small trout in that brook! I did use AI to add the colors to this old photo.

Once gracing the skyline of an ancient forest and then supporting a Bay Area pier, this Mackenzie chest carries more than tools, feathers, and fur. It carries the history of the wood itself. Due to the scarcity of old growth redwood, only a few chests can be produced. This one is spoken for, but you can reserve one for yourself today!

Hundreds of years in the forest.
Decades standing in the Bay.

Now, this old growth redwood begins its next chapter in the shop.

From history to heirloom.

Some pieces of wood carry history.

Some pieces preserve it.

This project began with salvaged old-growth Redwood from a historic San Francisco Bay pier… timber that stood for centuries before weathering salt, wind, and time along the Pacific.

The original “pier skin” has been preserved beneath epoxy, allowing that history to live on in a new form.

Tomorrow I’ll reveal the finished chest.

A limited piece from a finite supply of historic Redwood.

With a reverence for wood, this Daytripper is almost beyond comparison. Centuries old Redwood that spent countless years in the harsh elements of the San Francisco Bay has been given new life as a Daytripper fly-tying chest.

The scales have been carefully preserved in epoxy resin and incorporated into the lids. The super tight grain reflects the antiquity of the Redwood itself, which has a shimmering reddish-brown glow.

Due to the scarcity of this historic wood, only five chests can be produced, making them a very special part of your fly tying desk.

Reserve yours today before they're gone.
