Sometimes feeding the birds is about more than feeding the birds. 💚

We see it in our store all the time. Someone tells us about the house finch that visits every morning, the woodpecker that finally discovered a new feeder, or the enjoyable few moments they spend watching the feeders with their morning coffee.

And you can tell,it matters.

Research continues to find connections between spending time with birds and nature and better mental well-being. But honestly, our customers have been telling us that for years!

Watching the birds gives us a reason to slow down. To look out the window instead of at a screen. To notice what's happening right outside our own homes. And sometimes, on a particularly hard or busy day, that little bit of normalcy is exactly what we need.

So refill the feeder. Pour the coffee. Sit for five minutes longer than you planned.

The birds may be getting the food, but sometimes we're the ones getting fed. 🐦💛

Be nice to crows. They might remember you for the next 17 YEARS. 😳🐦‍⬛

We already knew crows were smart, but their memories are pretty incredible!

Researchers at the University of Washington discovered that crows can recognize and remember the face of a person they associate with danger. In a long-running experiment, wild crows were still reacting to a threatening masked face up to 17 years later.

But here's where it gets even more fascinating: they can tell other crows about you! 😯

Crows that never had the original bad experience can learn that a particular person is a threat by watching other crows scold and mob that person. That information can spread through the flock and even to a new generation.

So when a crow seems to be watching you closely…it probably is. 👀

Crows recognize individual human faces, remember their experiences and learn from one another.
Basically, if you're going to make an impression on the neighborhood crows, make it a good one. 😂

Have you ever tried feeding birds mealworms?

They’re a fall favorite around here! We know they might not win any beauty contests, but mealworms are a top pick for many of our backyard regulars and they’re especially tempting for migrating warblers passing through.

Live mealworms give birds a nutritious boost, while dried ones are super convenient to keep on hand. Curious about adding mealworms to your feeders? Let’s chat next time you’re in the store!

October is here, and that means it’s time to shine a (spooky) spotlight on some of our most misunderstood backyard visitors, bats! 🦇

Did you know there are nearly 1,000 bat species worldwide? These nighttime acrobats aren’t just Halloween icons,
they’re true superheroes of the sky!

🦟 One bat can gobble up hundreds of mosquitoes and other pesky insects in a single night.

🌸 Some bats even pollinate flowers and help spread seeds, making them essential for healthy ecosystems.

Here in the US, you’re most likely to spot the Little Brown Bat or the Big Brown Bat (yes, those are their real names, points for honesty! 😂).

So, next time you catch a glimpse of a bat fluttering through your backyard twilight, give a little cheer for nature’s night shift crew.

They’re working hard to keep our evenings peaceful and our gardens thriving. 🌙💛 Have you seen any bats in your yard lately? Share your sightings or batty stories below!

Many backyard birds are clever food hiders, or “cachers,” storing seeds, nuts and even insects in tree crevices, under bark or in the ground to eat later! 🌳🥜 These smart birds use landmarks, the sun and even each other to keep track of their stashes, helping them survive tough winters and busy seasons. ❄️☀️ Watching them work is like seeing a tiny treasure hunt happen in your backyard! 🔍✨

It's our annual reminder!!!

❌ Those old-fashioned, stretchy, stringy, realistic-looking spider webs also capture birds, bugs, and other small creatures! Those spider webs turn into a real-life horror story for many of our beloved feathered & furry friends every Halloween season.

The good news is some great alternatives WON’T get stuck to your hangnails (see, I speak from experience 😳), clean up more manageable, and don’t trap our valued wildlife!

Opt for one of these options instead and if you just enjoy the seasonal pain in the butt those original spider web decorations bring…save them for indoor use only! 🕸🕷

We did several molting posts a while back, but a few birds are still going through this process right now! Have you found a feather or two around your yard lately?

Some are more obvious, like this mockingbird with a rough hair day! Others, you may want to pull out those binoculars and search for short or missing feathers on each wing!

The windows in our homes and offices can be hazardous for birds. Birds cannot readily distinguish the presence of a pane of transparent glass from an unobstructed space or passageway and often fly into window panes causing injury or death. Click here to learn more: www.wbu.com/window-strikes

In the Northern Hemisphere, the First Day of Autumn is Tuesday, September 22. That's when the length of day and night are almost the same. Be sure your feeders are ready for some hungry birds that are either preparing or recharging for the longer nights.

The Blue Jay shown is an example of a North American bird working hard to find the additional calories needed to make it through autumn's longer hours of darkness. Which birds are visiting your backyard this season? Share in the comments.
