My first legit Ottoman set, made of silks from India but sent through the Netherlands. She wanted single layers too, so I was working on tissue. But wow did it come out spectacularly. I think this is the set that solidified my journey into Ottoman and Persian garment research.

Dear clients, friends….

I endeavor to do my absolute best to find the best fabrics at the best price so I can make quality garments for you. But I’m ONE PERSON and I have to scour hundreds of websites, read thousands of reviews, search fiber contents, look up ALL THE HISTORY (because I don’t just have Ottoman or Persian wearing customers), figure out if designs will work with a period and culture, and if the fiber content will gel with the other fabrics I am using in an outfit. I do this while also handling a minimum of four full scale orders a month and attempts to make stock, and attempts to research and develop new original patterns, while also managing a home- and I’m disabled.

But I am human. And although I have a business account, I don’t have the overhead to buy bulk wholesale lots. I couldn’t do this and make one of a kind ensembles. Instead I’d become a cookie cutter business to use the fabric up. This being said, if I find a retailer who I think is good, I can only go by what info is available to me and I have to make decisions based on that info.

Regarding Living History Market- I have chatted with Damien online before and he told me they do small batch weaving/manufacture at their shop in France. I was told the content was primarily silk with some rayon (70/30), not mostly rayon. If there was deception, I would have no way of knowing.

What I won’t tolerate though, is commentary on my own site that is negative, unproductive, unkind, or unhelpful. If you have information about a source or you don’t agree with some of my choices, feel free to PM me. Otherwise, offer helpful alternative suggestions that benefit those who view my site. My goal is to TEACH and be HELPFUL to those who wish to buy or make or learn about the garments I showcase.

I have never professed to be perfect or the best, but I try very hard to strive constantly for excellence and to BE KIND while doing it. By all means, engage in conversation and share your thoughts here- I even ask for it! But be constructive and offer alternatives- don’t just crap talk a merchant and then fail to offer an alternative. That will get you blocked after a few times of engaging in this behavior.

Be helpful. Teach. Learn. Be kind.

Arrived today from France. For a special order. But I wanted to show WHY I think Living History Market has superior historic reproduction silks. Pictures cannot do the luster or color justice. The green is a deep emerald but the photos keep catching the Red Cross weave. And the yellow is like pure spun gold.

The Mood fabrics just showed up and when I opened the box I screamed! I bought one fabric for me- an ocean like organic brocade in oranges and reds that gives off serious Ursula vibes. 10000x better than I imagined!

And then the YaYaHan black roses- it’s 3/4 thinner and lighter than the version we sold at Joann’s! It’s absolutely breath taking.

Next we’re featherweight knits. Ok- hear me out- I want to make long scarves/sash/tarpus wraps with them. Since they are an experiment they will be limited run.

When Fal gets home I’ll ask her to help me take pics or video. I’m flaring due to weather today so not strong enough to do alone. But just wait!!!!

Today’s topic: TOP STITCHING

I top stitch because I have learned over 35+ years of costuming that it helps keep garments looking crisp and not warped over time, helps keep secure and more durable, and alleviates the need for a ton of ironing- especially on delicate fabrics.

I now use it as a signature, a method of making a garment last longer. I add top stitching on top of 1-2 other lines of stitching.

However, I make historic reproduction garments. Top stitching is not common in the cultures I reproduce. But the stitching is now something to consider. If I stop top stitching and use historic methods of sewing garments, it will add time to construction. Time/labor= cost.

So my question- do I start developing methods of sewing the garments as quickly as I can without the top stitching and adjust prices to match the labor time

Or

Do I offer no top stitching as an option in custom work but keep it in my regular production?
