SitRep re: Bill Smallwood heart surgery recovery.
I’m doing great, feeling better every day but I’m still on limited duty. I’m cleared to drive but no long trips and no heavy lifting. Cardiac rehab twice a week, etc..
My friends at BankerSmith are putting on a benefit for us which will really help since I’m still not back to working full time.

I guess we need to explain what happened so folks can stop worrying. Two weeks ago today, on Tuesday, January 30th, I had open heart surgery at Austin Heart Hospital for a three way bypass. I am recuperating at home and doing better than expected. I am limited as to what I can do right now. No strenuous activity etc., but I’m up walking around and the local cardio rehab is supposed to set me up with a program.
Since I can't go back to work right away a donation site is being set up at a bank for anyone wishing to help financially. Friends and neighbors have been bringing food, HEB gift cards, etc. A church group has supplied rides to appointments and took me to HEB for a short shopping trip and then they paid for the groceries. God is certainly looking out for us.

Saturday evening the Lone Star Swing Orchestra played for a dance in the Pacific Showroom at the Hangar Hotel on the grounds of the Gillespie County Airport just south of Fredericskburg, Texas. We had a great crowd of folks dancing and listening in much appreciated A/C on a hot dry Texas summer night. We were doing a Luau themed show with a few Hawaiian tunes like Hawaiian War Chant and Hawaii Five-O. A fun festive evening.

However, a couple of things weighed heavy on our minds. The recent tragedy of the deadly fires on Maui came to everyone’s thoughts at any mention of the Islands and Saturday morning we awoke to the sad news of the passing of Jimmy Buffet. Jimmy was the embodiment of the tropical lifestyle. His album Changes In Attitudes, Changes In Latitudes was one of my favorites. We just couldn’t let the evening pass without paying tribute to Jimmy and all the parrot heads. Unfortunately, we didn’t have any big band arrangements for any Buffet tunes so we decided to do what musicians do in such impromptu situations. We faked it. I sang “Come Monday” and “Margaritaville” and I must say it was a struggle getting through those songs without chocking up. The band did a masterful job of backing me up and we even got a few compliments on the “arrangements”.

There’s a luau style dance at the Hangar Hotel on Labor Day Saturday. Swing dance lessons start at 7:00 pm and the Lone Star Swing Orchestra starts playing at 8:00 pm. Food and beverages. Prizes for best costumes. Call 830-997-9990 for more information or tickets.
