MEET THE MAKERS: Sabine Mullin & Terri Kunkler

Meet ceramic artists Sabine Mullin and Terri Kunkler, who will be sharing a booth at this year’s market!

Sabine Mullin:
“Pottery - a living art - enhances our daily lives. My pieces range from useful to decorative. My mugs and pots are sturdy and intended for daily use. Most importantly, they are meant to bring joy. The surface carvings and decorations are often inspired by the piece itself as I work on it. I am fascinated by the way glazes interact with the clay body and each other when layered. The possibilities are infinite. So, I am still working on finding a favorite combination. The color range of my pottery is a reflection of this journey.” ✨

Terri Kunkler:
“After I retired from a teaching career I found pottery! I love creating fun, functional pottery pieces. I enjoy decorating with transfers and learning new techniques, especially from other potters.” ✨

MEET THE MAKER: Pottery by Friends

Meet Stephanie Lawshe, Alyssa Budoff, and Tori Powers—the trio behind Pottery by Friends!

“Pottery by Friends is a Fredericksburg-based ceramic collective formed by three friends—Stephanie Lawshe, Alyssa Budoff, and Tori Powers—who share a love of clay and a love of community. Each artist brings her own style and inspiration to the wheel, but they sell together because creating is more fun as a team.

Stephanie discovered pottery in 2021, after two decades exploring other creative mediums. Drawn to the grounding, meditative process of working with clay, she creates whimsical, nature-inspired pieces full of personality.

Alyssa began throwing in 2021. She approaches her work with a sense of humor, giving everyday objects a personality of their own—mugs with expressive faces, planters shaped like quirky little creatures. Alongside these playful pieces, she also creates vases and bowls that showcase her range with glaze and form.

Tori returned to pottery in 2022, after a high school class first sparked her interest. She creates vessels, bowls, and lamps marked by abstract, minimalist carving, often burnished or left unglazed to let the clay’s natural beauty—and, in her lamps, the light—shine through.

Together, Pottery by Friends invites you to explore three distinct voices shaped by the same material—and the joy of making it together.” ✨

MEET THE MAKER: Padgett Studios

Meet Sam & Wendy Padgett, the makers behind Padgett Studios!

“Padgett Studios is the husband and wife team of Sam & Wendy Padgett, both graduates of the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. These Richmond, VA artists specialize in creating handmade, nature inspired, sculptural and functional ceramic art.

Their aesthetic reflects urban design elements through a filter of natural forms and imagery. They create playful, voluptuous shapes that capture the natural fluidity of the clay. Each piece is handmade, unique in both form and surface design using a painterly color play.”

MEET THE MAKER: Sperlazza Pottery

“Sperlazza Pottery is handmade bright functional pottery for your home, kitchen and everyday life. I make each piece by hand, then layer the surface with brightly colored slips and glazes. The patterns are made by screen printing slips onto newsprint then building up layers of color, I transfer the image onto the clay in a monoprinting fashion. I love bringing bright colors and bold patterns to traditional functional pottery. All my items are made to be used over and over in your everyday life and home.”

“I’ve always loved art, I migrated through various media until first studying ceramics at Mary Washington College. Melding inspiration from my travels in Korea and my immersion in the American pottery tradition, my work centers around wheel thrown functional stoneware that seeks to bridge the gaps between clean lines and organic shapes, rustic and refined, form and function.”

MEET THE MAKER: Corgi Clay

Meet ceramic artist Deb Balestreri, owner and operator of Corgi Clay Art Center!

“My work in clay spans both functional pottery and figurative sculpture, united by a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, material, and the human experience. My pottery draws inspiration from classic Eastern and Western historical traditions, blending timeless forms with contemporary surface design. Function remains at the heart of my process; I create pieces intended to be handled, used, and integrated into daily life. Through thoughtful attention to color, texture, and form, I seek to elevate everyday rituals and foster a meaningful connection between object and user.

Alongside my functional work, my sculptural practice explores contemplative themes through the figure, often reflecting on identity, emotion, memory, and the quiet complexities of being human. While much of my sculpture carries a reflective and introspective quality, I also embrace whimsy as an essential part of my creative process. Playful forms, unexpected characters, and lighthearted narratives provide a counterbalance to more serious subject matter, allowing curiosity and imagination to guide the work in new directions. Together, these two bodies of work reflect my ongoing fascination with clay’s ability to communicate both utility and meaning.”
