I have a soft spot for this one. Cole Clark is known for two things: having the best plugged in acoustic sound out there and using beautiful Australian woods. This FL2 in Bunya and Blackwood isn't the flashiest of them all, but it's the first model of Cole Clark I ever owned and the one that made me fall in love with them. It's simple, but different. It has a classic look, but not resting on old laurels. It's just a great looking, playing, and sounding guitar.

This one is available at TreeBoneGuitars.com and in our showroom.

We love working with everyone in their search for guitars. Admittedly, we don’t see many beginners because of the level of instruments (read “price”) we’re selling. We do see all sorts of other players though. We see the old salt with concrete calluses. We see the guys and gals on quest for their own, ultimate, personal tone or just strumming on the weekend. We see the collectors who know more about the origin story of a particular, rare tonewood than we do. We see all of them (you), but there is one type that is extra special: The First Timer.

What we mean is the person who is making the leap from lower priced production guitars to higher quality and maybe even boutique. Why do we think it’s extra special? It’s the joy and realization that comes out of them when they experience the difference; it’s contagious. It’s the way they all strum a guitar and wait… and wait for the resonance to die off. It’s the smile and the follow-on eagerness to play as many guitars as they can while they’re with us- to experience the different brands, sizes, and tonewood combinations. It’s fun for them and fun for us.

There’s a widely spread notion among beginner guitar players- it’s that they have to earn the right to buy a better guitar. It’s silly. We all do it, but it’s silly. If you enjoy it, nothing else matters. It doesn’t matter how you play, where you play, or if anyone else is listening. It only matters that you love doing it. There’s nothing to earn.

Number two of two matching TOM’s from Huss and Dalton- likely the last to be made with Blue Denim Sitka. Paired with sinker mahogany for a truly rare sound, look, and feel. Although both of this set use the same tone woods, each is unique with varying figuring and grain.

Available now in our showroom and online at TreeBoneGuitars.com

Everyone knows the legendary status of Huss and Dalton acoustics, but did you know they also make amazing electrics? This absolute beauty is a Meridian Double Cut Burst paired with Fralin PAF's, two volumes, and a master tone. It is incredibly well balanced, plays like a dream, and backs up its good looks with deep tone.

This is our first electric from Huss and Dalton and there is zero doubt we'll be asking them to build us some more.

Available now at our showroom and online.

On to Cole Clark acoustics and a size comparison. From left to right we have the FL 3 in bunya and rosewood, The AN Deluxe in camphor laurel, and the LL in Blackwood. The FL is the dreadnought equivalent, the AN a grand auditorium, and the LL is a small frame. All include the patented PG3 3-way pickup system for the best plugged in acoustic sound.

We have a deep selection of Cole Clark guitars online and in-person at our showroom.

This will get a little sciency, but before we go there let's just cover the basics. We should first cover terminology. There’s a made up word that is used all the time to describe the process used to torrefy wood: “torrefacation.” It is, actually, “torrefaction” and I too am guilty of using the fake word; I did it today. It just sounds right, I know, but it isn’t.

Torrefaction is, simply put, a process of using heat to dry wood. Its intended purpose is to advance the wood to a condition similar to years of aging, but quickly so we don’t have to wait two decades to get that old guitar sound. Some people prefer the terms “thermo” or “thermo cured,” but it's the same thing and short for the technical term of “thermal modification.” That reminds me of when I "thermally modified” my G.I. Joe toys when I was a kid, but that’s another story entirely. Then there’s the term the salty repair tech might use: “roasted.” They are all names for the same thing.

People ask if we still get excited about getting guitars in. The answer is absolutely YES! Some, we can't wait to see and hear and this is one we've been waiting on. This Lowden GL-J Custom stained in green with a figured maple neck, Lowden's signature falling leaf inlays, gold hardware, and Lollar Imperial Humbuckers is the epitome of Lowden's electric line. It is gorgeous, sounds incredible, and plays like a dream.

Available now at TreeBoneGuitars.com and in person in our showroom.

Lowden GL guitars continue to gain recognition as world class instruments. If you think about it, it's no surprise. They've applied the same Lowden philosophy as their acoustics: uncompromising quality and craftsmanship, premium materials, beautiful design, and an unmistakable Lowden tone. Many people are surprised to learn the first guitars George built as a very young lad and teenager were in fact electric guitars. He'll admit they were not let's say, "perfect," but they were electric and did resemble guitars. Nowadays, they are as close to perfect as one can get and a benchmark for the highest quality lutherie.

There are two models of Lowden electric guitars- the GL-10, a solid body single cut that is also available chambered to reduce weight, and the GL-J, a semi-hollow body like the one pictured here. All Lowden electrics employ Lollar pickups with a choice of Imperial Humbuckers, P-90's, or Eldorado Split Coil.

This beautiful example is capped in figured maple with Denim stain and has P-90's. We love how only the face is stained, leaving a maple edge; it's a unique and classy touch. This one is available now at TreeBoneGuitars.com and in person at our showroom.

We’re a different kind of guitar shop. With that come some pretty frequent questions; most start with “Why don’t you (fill in the blank).” So, here they are, in case you had any of the same questions:

Q: Why don’t you carry more brands?

A: We carry Lowden, Huss and Dalton, Cole Clark, Cirrus, Furch, select Godin, and several small luthiers, as well as Acus and AER amps. We carry what we believe is best in class- best American high end boutique in Huss and Dalton, for example. Many shops carry a broad range of brands, but only a couple guitars from each. That’s great, but we believe that the best buying experience comes from having the opportunity to play across a brand’s offerings, so we focus on select brands and try to keep high stock levels of those brands. What is the best brand in a class is subjective, our brands are what we feel are the best- we believe in them and their quality and own them ourselves.
