Malaysian Blackwood is a favorite here at the shop and we try to snag every guitar and wood set offered by our builders. It has a rich and balanced sound that pairs well with many different tops and resonates extremely well. Most notably, it's often paired with spruce for a brighter sound or sinker redwood for an even richer one. This Furch Red Deluxe in Alpine Spruce and Malaysian Blackwood (the Gc-LI a model) is a beautiful example in a Grand Auditorium size with all the appointments of the Deluxe series- including Furch's new Active Neck, Bevel Duo, and Player Soundport. It's not common to find Malaysian Blackwood outside of boutique builder's guitars as supply is limited and costly. The fact Furch is crafting guitars, albeit in limited numbers, with this wood is a testament to their efforts to bring extremely high quality guitars to players around the world.

That’s not the guitar for you…

If you’re buying a guitar remotely, either directly online or having it shipped from a dealer, you may never hear that phrase. You may never hear it even if you are in a shop trying various instruments. That’s not a good thing.

It's true that you might be, let’s say, a dreadnought person; they fit you, feel right, and you know you like them. So, if you are in a shop playing different dread's to find the right tone, there may not be a need to hear it. However, if you are playing across different sizes, body shapes, and scale lengths, it’s likely something you should hear. Why? Because the right guitar for you has to be a fit- in size, shape, scale length, style, and tone. If it isn’t, you’ll eventually be unhappy with it and the goal is for you to be forever happy with that guitar. Even if you trade it in or sell it later, it shouldn’t be because it wasn’t a fit for you.

It’s a pretty easy thing to do in the shop and more should do it. It’s pretty obvious to us, on the other side of the guitar from you. It’s the way you hold it, how comfortable you are with it, and how your fingers find the frets, just to name a few. The thing is, too many shops leave it up to you to decide that. That’s not to say if we tell you we don’t think a particular guitar is a fit, we won’t sell it to you, but rather that we think it’s a best practice to share how we feel about you and that guitar- that is our job, after all.

Buying remotely creates obvious challenges to this, but it’s not entirely lost. A good conversation, or several, about what you like and don’t like, tone you’re after, guitars you currently own and what you like and dislike about them can all help mitigate the risk of it arriving and not being a fit.

The moral(s) of the story:

- If a dealer tells you that a guitar doesn’t look like a fit, don’t be offended; be thankful they’re pointing it out and probably have your best interests at heart.
- If a you’re in a shop and don’t get that kind of help, find another shop- especially if you are shopping for a high end guitar.
- You are almost guaranteed to not get that kind of sound advice from a big box store.

Time for some controversy. To begin with, I’m not bashing Martin. I think they are a great American company. More importantly, I’m not bashing the people who work day in, day out at Martin in the factories- they are hard working individuals doing great work. Has Martin had slips (think 1970’s)? Sure, but who doesn’t slip up every once and again over a nearly 200 year period? I do, however, think there are two sides of Martin- the make great guitars side and the sell as many guitars as possible side; the two aren’t necessarily bedfellows.

I’m not going to get into what my issues are with Martin. It doesn’t matter. For the “Martin or nothing” camp, it will always be Martin or nothing. For the “never Martin” camp, it’ll always be that. For what it’s worth, I do think some of their guitars are great instruments.

I am speaking to the people in the middle- the people who want a great guitar and whose brand affinity is weaker than that desire. For you, here’s the controversy- there are better for the money, and I’m going to point them out...

What's the Difference?

We get this question a lot about the Furch Deluxe and Performance models. The good news is it's a simple answer. First, though, a keen eye may have noticed the labels in both of the guitars are the same- that's part of the point. The differences don't lie in the appearance or quality, so you wouldn't be able to tell them apart looking at them from the front. Each of the models in a color series carries the same grade of wood and appointments. They have the same finish as well.

The differences are that the Deluxe models do not have factory installed electronics and do have a player soundport for projecting sound towards the player. Whereas the Performance models do have factory installed electronics (LR Baggs) and do not have soundports. That's it, that's the difference.

As you climb the color model ladder, there are more differences- between Green and Yellow, or Yellow and Red, for example. The quality of wood increases, from AA to AAA, the appointments become clear, abalone rosettes for instance, and the level of electronics goes up (Stage Pro Element in Green and Stage Pro Anthem in Yellow).

So, deciding between a Deluxe and Performance model is a matter of applying what function the instrument will provide to you. If you are a performer and plug in, there's a pretty obvious connection with the naming convention. But, if you're a home player and plug in, you could go either way. You could go with the Deluxe for the soundport when you're not plugged in and add your pickup of choice for when you do- or just go for one that's ready out of the case for plugging in. If you don't plug in, or prefer to externally mic your guitars, then you save a few hundred dollars by going with the Deluxe.

Just arrived... the last Lowden GL-10 in Ebony we had didn't stay in the showroom for long. This one is another striking example, this time with Lollar Split Coil pickups. She's stout, weighing in at 9 lbs 11 oz, but beautiful ebony isn't light and she sure is beautiful.

The Lollar Split Coils each have their own switch and volume, with a common tone k**b, giving you plenty of options for blending the deep, complex sounds of this guitar.

The backs of electric guitars sometimes get mentioned in passing and don't get a lot of attention. This one, however, deserves a little recognition for its distinctive grain pattern. Yes, you'll be the only one to see it most of the time, but it's a heck of a view.

Cedar is a very popular tone wood. It has a more mellow tone than spruce, but is very responsive and resonant. It is often paired with rosewood or walnut to compliment what tone is trying to be achieved- rosewood for a little brightness or walnut to keep it mellow.

This Huss and Dalton OM-C in cedar and rosewood is a beautiful combination that has deep, but not overpowering lows, responds exceptionally well to fingerstyle, and resonates brightly. Like all Huss and Dalton's, it's an example of the pinnacle of American boutique guitar building.

Everyone knows rosewood is a staple of guitar building. It's one of the most commonly used woods for back and sides, if not the most common. It's also, much less commonly, used for tops- just like this beautiful Cole Clark Deluxe model. Just like every other Cole Clark, it sounds amazing plugged in, looks fantastic, and plays easy. This deluxe model has two-tone inlays on the fretboard, Cole Clark's braided rosette, tortoise binding, and the world renowned PG3 pickup system.
