Well its fall.. I have said it for over 15 years straight" I CATCH MY LARGEST BASS OF THE YEAR IN OCTOBER ON A CAVITRON BUZZBAIT". Well not this year because I caught a giant on Roland Martins Fishing Show earlier in the year on a Roland Martin Big Bass Spinner Bait but that was in Florida in the spring.
Being here in New Jersey and fishing the lakes here in the Tri State Area I am still going on record to say Im going to catch my largest bass in October on THE CAVITRON.
This bait is so productive at this time of the year. The water temps are cooling off and the bass are starting to feed heavily to build up their fat reserves for the long winter. The Cavitron is one of the most simplest and effective baits to use. A 7 year old kid to 85 year old grandma can use it with great results and ease of use. Ya just cast it out and reel it in at a slow steady retrieve just to keep it gurgling at the surface. The bait practically starts planing (surfacing) as soon as it hits the water and you start reeling.
Bass are moving shallow to feed --As the weeds and lily pads start fading away, bass will start to relate to the nearest hard cover such as rocks, boulders and wood. These are easy targets to spot so locating the bass becomes easier. My preference for throwing the Cavitron is a 7Ft Medium heavy bait casting rod with a high speed reel - 14 lb test mono is best-(I dont believe fluorocarbon is a necessity here because the bait is on top of the water no need to have the line invisible.) Braid I dont like for this application either. I want some stretch in the line because with braid I find I rip their lips off-Just kidding--What I mean is I and others react to quickly when the bass strikes and the no stretch braid pulls the bait away from them .I find hook up ratios diminish with braid and thats just my opinion.
Cast along shorelines and try to find what the bass are relating to. You can cover a lot of water rapidly with the Cavitron. If you start catching fish around visible cover than you can jump from area to area looking for that type of cover and now you are establishing a pattern. Remember cast past the cover about 5 or 6 feet if allowable. Start lifting your rod tip and start reeling as soon as the bait hits the water. What I have observed is the bass will not be spooked unlike if you cast right on top of them. They will be more curious and will look to see what fell into the water which I believe will entice them to strike the baits more often. Reel the bait and try to bump the cover/ what I have found is when the bait deflects off the cover -the bass will react to it like it is an injured prey. Thats called a "reaction strike". There are so many ways you can entice the bass to strike a buzz bait. Another technique I use is to "pop" the buzz bait. I find this is another great technique to get the bass to react to the bait and strike. I cast the bait out and every 10 to 15 feet I would twitch my rod tip with a quick snap of the wrist. That causes the blades to turn faster for a second and make it act erratically. It also creates more noise and commotion
The Cavitron Buzz bait not only catches big bass but also catches numbers of them. If you are tournament fishing, believe me this bait is very effective for winning tournaments this time of year. There have been times I and other fishermen throw it all tournament long. As for recreational fishermen-you will have more fun just than ever before.
THERE IS NO BETTER AND MORE EXCITING WAY TO CATCH BASS THAN A TOP WATER BITE WITH A CAVITRON .
