Today is Labor Day, so our magic is simple: make something that asks very little of you.

Put a simmer pot on the stove, let the house smell wonderful and give yourself permission to rest.

Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, following years of organizing by American workers. At its heart, the day recognizes the labor and contributions of working people.

And not all work happens at a workplace. Cooking, cleaning, caregiving and tending a home are forms of labor too, even when nobody clocks the hours.

For centuries, people have also brought fragrant plants, herbs and spices into their homes. Today’s simmer pots are a simple modern way to fill a space with scent, and scent has a particularly strong connection with memory.

Add more water as needed and never leave a simmering pot unattended.

Corn is everywhere, but its story is anything but ordinary.

Corn, or maize, didn’t begin as the plant we recognize today. Indigenous peoples in what is now Mexico began domesticating maize from a wild grass called teosinte roughly 9,000 years ago. Over thousands of years, Indigenous farmers carefully selected and cultivated it, transforming it into one of the world’s most important food crops.

Maize eventually spread throughout the Americas, becoming deeply connected with food, agriculture, community and tradition among many different Indigenous cultures.

Long before dried corn became something we associated with fall decorating, it was, and still is, food, history and culture.

As you work toward the doorway, imagine you’re clearing out everything that has been sitting too long: stale energy, old moods, clutter and whatever else you’re ready to move along.

Sometimes practical magic looks suspiciously like housework. 🧹

A besom is a traditional broom made by tying twigs or brush around a handle. Because brooms were closely connected with the home and hearth, they’ve gathered all kinds of household folklore over the centuries, especially around thresholds, protection and unwanted visitors.

🧹 Bristles up or bristles down?

This is where the lore gets fun. Some folk traditions and modern metaphysical practices say keeping a broom bristles-up near the door helps guard the home or keep unwanted energy from crossing the threshold.

There are also old folk beliefs about turning or repositioning a broom when an unwanted guest has overstayed their welcome and you’re ready for them to head home.

Cut an apple across the middle instead of from stem to bottom. Inside, the seed chambers form a little five-pointed star.

Sometimes changing how you look at something familiar is enough to reveal what was there all along.

Apples have collected centuries of symbolism around love, abundance, knowledge and harvest. In Greek mythology, golden apples appear in several stories, including the Garden of the Hesperides.

That star inside the apple has a perfectly natural explanation. Apples typically develop five seed chambers arranged around the core, which become especially visible when the fruit is sliced horizontally.

Cinnamon Maple Baked Apples

Core 2 apples and place them in a baking dish. Fill with a mixture of oats, cinnamon, chopped pecans, maple syrup and a little butter.

Bake at 375°F for about 30–40 minutes, until tender.

Apple is often associated with abundance and love, cinnamon with prosperity and warmth, and maple with sweetness.

There was a star hiding inside the apple the whole time.
