One of the fairly frequent requests I get in here is do I have any vintage bar guides, cocktail recipe books, mixer's references, that kind of thing.

Today I'm shelving...

The Official Mixer's Manual. [1956] first printing of Duffy & Beard's revised edition. Illustrated throughout, with drawings by Reisie Lonette. Very good condition, with mild handling wear and a few recipes tipped to pastedown. The original price on the front jacket flap is $2.50 - and coupled with yellow/orange topstain - this is one of the very first copies to hit shelves in 1956. Let's do it all over again seventy years later.

With more than 1,200 recipes, your speakeasy can be easy peasy lemon drop squeezy.

This is a beautiful copy of The Poetical Works of Robert Browning. [1940] Oxford; bound in full blue Morocco with custom blue cloth slipcase. Only very light handling wear.

In this case when I say "Morocco" I mean goatskin. There was a time hundreds of years ago when all premium goatskin leather was imported to Europe from the Northern African country. Over time the geonym Morocco replaced "premium Moroccan goat hide" or whatever.

At any rate that's what this is. A wonderful Morocco binding fit for a celebrated nineteenth century poet. The volume stands about 7.5 inches tall.

This is a fun post for me. I've acquired about a dozen decorative bindings just in the past couple of days. I get to show you all these newly-shelved items - some will look familiar and some completely new - BUT...

I'm holding one out until tomorrow.

Decorative bindings don't have to be expensive. In fact, today's photos show books that sort of ascend in retail value from about $20 to about $45. Tomorrow's drop is priced a little bit higher though, but I think you'll agree it's worth it.

Book of the Week:

IT. Stephen King. [2026] first printing of the fortieth anniversary edition; Scribner; about fine jacketed hardcover.

Today is Stephen King's 79th birthday, so it seems like a good day to drop this one. This edition of IT was just released a few weeks ago, but its inherent transgenerational popularity will drive sales. It won't be long before first printings will be a little harder to find.

And as for the current copy, I'll house the dust jacket in a removable archival cover. The deep matte black is very stylish, but I want to protect the jacket. The buyer can decided to remove the cover later.

We've got another significant birthday to note, and this time the long late figure is an artist. So happy 159th birthday to Arthur Rackham, one of the great British illustrators of that Golden Age. His style featured sort of twisting, lithe lines in a (somehow seemingly constant) mild gothic framework.

He illustrated Shakespeare, Grimm, Aesop, the Arthurian Legends, French Fairy Tales, Peer Gynt, Comus, Dickens, and more and more and more. He was as prolific as he was talented.

I've got one or two Rackham-illustrated works lying around.

And I'm open today 10:30 until 5:30.

Today is the 143rd birthday of the long late poet William Carlos Williams. I'm pretty sure I post a WCW tribute just about every year around this time.

Williams is one of my very favorite modernist poets, and within the modernist movement he was specifically an imagist. Imagism is a poetic thrust that seeks to snap a kind of photograph of a specific moment. The moment may be ostensibly unremarkable. But the whole point of the thing is to express to the reader that *this* moment won't happen again. And then what can be drawn out - in terms of relationships, art, society, humor, politics, history, whatever - from this (random?) moment in spacetime?

AND - the imagist's goal is to do this - paint the image - in as few words as possible. It's the reader's job to sort everything out. I've included a photo of my very favorite WCW poem with this post. Former students of mine may think it familiar 👀

The present book is a remarkable jacketed hardcover, the second printing of WCW's Collected Earlier Poems [1951] New Directions Publishing. It's in just incredible condition, and the dust jacket is almost never present with copies of this printing.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Jules Verne. [c.1955] Grosset & Dunlap; very good(+) vintage jacketed hardcover.

Grosset & Dunlap printed a handful of different 20,000 Leagues issues over the twentieth century. I've been able to find only one other available copy online with the same dust jacket art. It's that kind of classic mid-century science fiction vibe, with some great colors. The cover art also manages to give us a whiff of steam punk with the divers' tanks and helmets.

I get a *lot* of requests related to this title and sometimes more broadly re: Jules Verne. This is a very cool item, would make a great gift for the Jules Verne enthusiast.

That other copy I found? The seller wants $150. Yikes. That strikes me as pretty ambitious.

You can have mine for $50.
