Parents, caregivers, neighbors, coworkers and friends are often the true first responders. When more people are ready, more lives are saved. If you see a teen or adult collapse, call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest.

Just one thing I feel a need to clarify in an otherwise inspiring story. He says that he got broken ribs, so that meant CPR was done "right". Broken ribs are NOT an indication of right vs wrong. Can it happen? Yes. Can it NOT happen? Yes. May or may not, even with the best CPR skills. BUT, I *always* say: broken ribs can heal, dead cannot. Do NOT let fear of breaking ribs keep you from initiating CPR on someone! ❤️

June is National Men’s Health Month and this week is National CPR and AED Awareness Week. One heart attack survivor says if bystanders hadn’t come to his aid after he collapsed, he wouldn’t be here today.

Safety/well-being/*secure* surroundings should be the norm for all healthcare workers...but as a nurse myself who has walked to/from dark parking lots for many, many years, I wanted to share this. My heart breaks for the nurse's family/friends/co-workers/community.

Couple things here to note: Heart attack is NOT synonymous with cardiac arrest. It can definitely lead to a cardiac arrest. CPR class videos explain the difference between the two. Women can have very different heart attack symptoms from men. This can lead to a delay in care. The thought of her *driving* while having the symptoms she was having is very scary, especially since she had her child in the car. Her doctor didn't send her directly to the ER because she was not having symptoms in front of him??? 😮😮Thankfully, she survived the ordeal. Many do not. Because the symptoms are thought to be everything BUT a heart attack. Especially among younger people, even more so among women. ❤️❤️

“I started screaming, ‘I need CPR,’ so Joel, my assistant manager, jumped in and started doing CPR,” he said. “All I could think about was I need an AED, and I didn’t vocalize that to anybody. I just jumped up and ran.”
