The Story Behind Our Rooster 🐓

Some logos are designed. Others have a story behind them. And then there are the ones that practically earn their place in the family.

Around here, roosters have always been a staple of our farm and a part of who we are. Long before the Vintage Bunkhouse became what it is today, there were roosters crowing on our little piece of Idaho, adding their own personality to the rhythm of farm life.

Of course, not everyone appreciated our feathered alarm clocks. ( Our previous state )

Years ago, we had neighbors who weren't exactly fans of our roosters, despite the fact that we were legally zoned to have them. What followed was a whole lot of back and forth, phone calls, county ordinances, and visits from animal control officers. Over time, we actually built relationships with many of the very people who kept showing up at our property. Farm life has a funny way of doing that.

Eventually, we were told that our original rooster was grandfathered into the ordinance. We could keep him, but once he passed away, we wouldn't be allowed to replace him.

Well, if there's one thing you should know about us, it's that we're a little stubborn when it comes to the things we love.

So, every time our rooster passed away, we'd find another rooster of the exact same breed, at a similar age, just a little younger. And somehow, our rooster story kept going. One rooster became another, and another, and the tradition carried on for years.

Was there a little bit of stick it to the neighbors mixed in? Absolutely. We'd be lying if we said otherwise. 😂

But somewhere along the way, it became about so much more than that.

That rooster came to represent our roots, our farm, our determination, and the kind of people we are. We don't give up easily on the things that matter to us, and we have never been very good at letting someone else decide what makes our little corner of the world special.

As the farm grew and the Vintage Bunkhouse evolved from a tiny 200-square-foot bunkhouse on our 1908 farm into the antique and home décor business we have today, our rooster remained part of the story.

He was there before the storefront, before the events, before the antiques traveled across the country, and before the brand became what it is today.

So when it came time to create a mascot that truly represented us, there was really only one choice.

Our rooster.

We gave him a little attitude, a little vintage flair, and a personality that fits right in with ours. He's a little rebellious, a little rough around the edges, and entirely unapologetic about who he is. Honestly, he fits in perfectly around here.

Today, our rooster is more than a nod to farm life. He's a reminder of where we started, the stories that shaped us, and the importance of staying true to ourselves. He's a symbol of our roots, our grit, our humor, and our love for things with a little history and a whole lot of character.

Because at the Vintage Bunkhouse, we believe the best things aren't always perfect, polished, or brand-new. Sometimes, they're weathered, a little stubborn, full of character, and have a story worth telling.

And sometimes, they have feathers.

Meet our rooster. A little farm history, a little rebellion, and a whole lot of Vintage Bunkhouse. 🐓

There are three things in my life that I am absolutely certain about: my faith, my family, and antiques.
First, my faith.
I am 100% certain of my faith in Jesus Christ and my relationship with Him. That doesn't mean I have it all together. Quite the opposite. I know I am a sinner. I know I am flawed. I know I can be all over the freaking place. Hell, I have ADHD.
But I know who I am. I know where I am. I know what I can change and what I still need to work on. My faith isn't about pretending I'm perfect. It's about knowing who I am and knowing who I belong to.
Second, my family.
It will always be about them. Always. My husband, my kids, my family. They are the foundation underneath everything else I do. Life changes, businesses change, seasons change, but my family will always be my priority.
And then there are antiques.
I LOVE antiques.
I love finding them. I love researching them. I love the hunt, the history, the craftsmanship, the imperfections and the stories. If I could travel the entire world picking antiques 100% of the time, I absolutely would.
If I had an unlimited bankroll, I'd be the high roller sitting at the Texas Hold'em table, except I'd be betting on antiques.
And honestly, I think part of the reason I love them so much is because I grew up with culture.
Thank God I grew up with culture.
I grew up break dancing, doing graffiti, teaching hip hop, and immersing myself in different people, cultures, families, music and food. Filipino food. Asian food. Mexican food. Music playing. People dancing. Friends from all over the world.
I was there.
I didn't grow up believing there was only one way to experience life. I grew up surrounded by different people, different styles, different stories and different ways of doing things.
And somehow, all of that became part of the way I see antiques.
Because antiques aren't just old stuff to me. They're culture. They're history. They're art. They're craftsmanship. They're the people who made them, the people who owned them and the lives they've been a part of.
That's why I love what I do.
And I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
Nobody loves antiques more than me.
Not because I have the biggest account. Not because I sell the most. Not because I know everything.
Because I genuinely, completely, ridiculously love the hunt.
Next up on the docket?!
Website launch October 9th. Stay tuned. We ship around the United States one-of-a-kind American and European antiques. Items you won't be able to find in the store. First hand. You want it. You got to come shop my website. Second of all the store is always top tier, on point because every one of my vendors love what they do and so do I. Let's just keep it copesthetic folks!

Welcome to The Vintage Bunkhouse. 🤎

I’m Kara Burke, the owner and picker behind The Vintage Bunkhouse.

Before I was digging through antique shops, estate sales and barns across the country, I spent 16 years in EMS and retired as a paramedic. Caring for people and serving my community was a huge part of my life. When that chapter ended, I found myself pouring that same heart for people, community and purpose into something completely different.

In June of 2021, The Vintage Bunkhouse began on our 1908 family farm in a little 200 square foot bunkhouse.

What started as a tiny space filled with things I loved slowly grew year after year, eventually bringing us to our beautiful brick and mortar in historic downtown Fruitland, Idaho.

And while the building has changed, the heart behind it hasn’t.

I have always been drawn to things with a story. Antiques, especially European antiques, have my heart. Give me old ironstone, French pieces, weathered wood, aged copper, transferware and anything beautifully worn by time and I’m probably going to fall in love with it.

I don’t want everything to look perfect.

I love the stains. I love the crazing. I love the chippy paint. I love the patina. I love the things that show their history.

Moody, old, weathered and beautifully imperfect. That’s my style. 🤎

And then there’s the farm.

Our 1908 farm is home to cows, pigs, geese, ducks, chickens, fruit trees, grapes and seasonal vegetables. Some of what we grow and produce makes its way into The Vintage Bunkhouse, and we also supply local restaurants in our area.

Inside the Bunkhouse you’ll find nine vendors, each with their own unique eye and love for picking. Everyone brings something different, yet it all comes together cohesively throughout the store.

We also have two in house sourdough bakers because beautiful antiques, baked treats and fresh bread just belong together. 🥖

When I’m not at the store or on the farm, you’ll probably find me somewhere across the country digging through an antique shop, barn, estate sale or market looking for the next treasure.

I’ve taken that love of picking online too with our Friday Flatlays and Instagram Live sales, sharing the pieces I find with people far beyond our little corner of Idaho.

And now we’re taking another exciting step.

Our website is launching this week. 🤎

This little bunkhouse has grown far beyond what I ever imagined when I started with 200 square feet on our farm.

But at its core, The Vintage Bunkhouse is still exactly what I hoped it would become.

A place filled with beautiful old things. A place where history gets another life. A place where community matters. A place where farm life and old world treasures can meet. And a place where I get to share the things I love with all of you.

So if you’re new here, welcome. I’m so glad you found us.

Come wander through the Bunkhouse with me.

There’s always something old, something beautiful and something with a story waiting to be found.

Kara 🤎
