New Year's Eve is celebrated in various ways around the world. Many people in Spain and Spanish speaking countries eat a dozen grapes right before midnight, to symbolize their hopes for the following months. Ring shaped cakes and pastries are eaten in some countries, which signify that the year has come full circle. Legumes are eaten in various countries, which symbolize coins, and a hope for financial success in the upcoming year; lentils are popular in Italy, and black eyed peas are a favorite in the southern United States. Other popular festivities that cross international boundaries include the watching of fireworks and the singing of songs.

Do you have a special tradition for the night that you do with friends and family? Is there a food recipe that has to be available that night for consumption? Do share!

Happy Birthday Marty P and Jammie who are celebrating today! We hope you have a great and fabulous day!

If you love bacon than today we suggest you imbibe like crazy! It's Bacon Day!

Today is also Falling Needles Family Fest.. Maybe your Christmas tree is starting to lean and maybe it's losing it's needles. It could be that your tree is tired and ready to move on to greener pastures.

Today's holiday serves as a reminder to clean up and recycle the live Christmas tree.

Every state offers recycling options, many with pick up. In Oswego County - Residents can bring their Christmas trees to the Bristol Hill Landfill in Volney, where the trees will be composted. The landfill is open from 7:30 am to 4 pm. Monday through Friday and 8 am to noon Saturday. Some towns and villages also handle trees.

Mulch the tree for bedding around your home or donate to mulching programs.

Before recycling, you can provide shelter to birds and use the tree as a place to hang treats to feed them. The tree will need some anchoring. When winter is over, you can still use the tree for other recycling needs.

After your tree provided shelter to the birds, it can also offer shelter to the fish, too. In ponds and lakes, trees are used to create protection for spawning and feeding.

While your tree should never be burned in a wood stove or fireplace indoors due to the type of oils in fir and evergreen trees, the tree may be chopped and used in the firepit outdoors.

Depending on where you live, Christmas trees may be used as soil erosion barriers for lakes, rivers, and dunes.

It's National Hero Day and we would like to tell you about Mattress Mack! In the day when we were kids, on a particularly hard Christmas, we woke up bright and early to go to the Gallery Furniture in Houston Texas to help serve food to the needy. It was a wonderful way to get us out of our heads and into the Christmas spirit. It is a memory that we have not forgotten.

Here is more about what this amazing man does, from a story in February 2021.

"Texas has seen more than its fair share of weather-related calamities—but there’s one valiant businessman who has consistently stepped up to make sure his Houston neighbors always have shelter from the storm.

When the recent winter storm, Uri, took out the power grid, leaving the state in shambles, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale opened two of his Gallery Furniture locations as impromptu warming stations.

Over the course of a 72-hour period, Mattress Mack and his crew provided 3,000-plus meals and overnight accommodations to more than 700 Houston residents, after offering shelter to the community on the store’s website.
And, this isn’t the first time Mattress Mack turned into a Good Samaritan. In 2005, the Lone Star paladin welcomed refugees from Hurricane Katrina, and in 2017, he gave succor to victims of Hurricane Harvey....

When tropical storm Imelda hit in 2019, once again, McIngvale made sure Furniture Gallery’s doors were open for those in need. With the onset of Uri, he took to social media, inviting anyone who needed to, to come on down.
While the store had a diesel-run generator to provide electricity, with only a single functional water pipe, plumbing became a critical issue. Ensuring COVID-19 protocols were followed added another layer of complexity to the situation.

McIngvale and his staff rose to the occasion, rigging a solution to meet the plumbing demand, and also ensuring that once visitors were wearing masks, they observed proper social distancing before settling in to fill up on warm meals, watch some TV, and get some much-needed rest....

While McIngvale may best be known locally for the over-the-top commercials that have made Mattress Mack a household name for three decades, he’s been getting some king-sized praise via the Internet from the west coast to the east for being the go-to humanitarian port in so many Houston storms....

Much of the expense for his neighbors’ care comes out of McIngvale’s own pocket, but to him, that’s how it should be. “To whom much has been given, much is expected,” McIngvale told The Post. “We’ve benefited from public support over the years, so it’s our obligation to open our doors and let people come in to get a respite from the storm. It’s the right thing to do.”

It's National Playing Card Day!

Here's something about the game we love to play that we know as Rummy 5000 aka as Hillbilly Rummy.

So how is it played? Basically like rummy but with two decks of cards with the jokers. Shuffling that many cards is a challenge. You would shuffle all the cards, and each player takes a turn dealing. After shuffling, to deal you would turn the first card up to each person and that would determine how many cards that player would start to play with. The next person, turn card up and count out their cards.

Every hand and every player had a different number of cards to begin with. The first card dealt to you if a Joker, you were dealt 20 cards on top of that Joker, if an Ace you are dealt 15 on top of the Ace. If a face card, (King, Queen Jack) it would be 10 cards, the rest of the cards, 2 through 10, would be the amount of that card. You never know what you are going to be dealt. It is truly luck of the draw.

There are different Wild Cards every hand too which made it more exciting. Jokers are automatically wild and can be used to create any spread. But the last card dealt by the dealer, was a wild card for everyone at the table. It helps to keep track of the different wild cards on the score paper, because they changed every hand.

We took turns going clockwise around the table to deal. If you were the dealer, the person on your left was ALWAYS first to play.

Spreads were created with at least 3 cards in succession, of any of the 4 suits. You also could have 3 of a kind. You could play on another persons spread. For example if another person had a spread of 2,3,4 of a suit you could play an Ace or a 5 of the same suit on their spread. Or if they have 3 of any kind as a spread and you have a match you can play on that also.

Discarded cards: This is just like regular rummy. Each hand you have to discard a card. You can draw from the deck or pick up from the discard pile but you have to use the last card in the pile that you pick up in that turn. You have to take all the cards on top of it.

Be careful of how many cards the other players have. I have made the gamble many times to pick up all the cards from the discard pile needing only the last card to make a 15 point spread, when the person next to me was holding only one card and I'd get caught with all of them in my hand which they would add to their score.

Floating
If all the cards in your hand play and you don't have a discard then it's called "floating". Everyone gets another chance to play, as long as you don't have a discard. You are not officially out until you have a discard. The person who is floating, the play just continues to the next player without the floaters discard. The floater just keeps drawing another card from the deck when it is their turn. The rule is you can't pick up the top card of the discard pile if you are floating and then just put it down to go out!! You have to draw. If the card they draw plays and they don't have a discard they are still floating and it can go on until someone plays all their cards, has a discard and goes out.

Scoring Points
Jokers and Aces = 100 Face Cards & 10's=10 small card=5
Wild Cards=100 which means if it is an Ace or Joker that comes up wild, then they will be worth 200 points.
The person who goes out gets all the remaining cards from all the players held in their hands and adds them to their score. The other players count what they have played and laid in front of them as a spread to their score. You went to a score of 5,000, whoever reached that, won.

Here are some cool gifts received in years past by a few of the co-authors of 'A Scrapbook of Christmas Firsts'.

Cathy - "After losing the diamond from my engagement ring in Murfreesboro, Arkansas - home of the only diamond mine in the USA - I asked my husband, David, for a simple gold band. Santa Dave gifted me with the perfect wedding band on Christmas Morning, and several years later, on Valentine's Day, the engagement ring sparked to life again."

Terra - "During a visit to my hometown, I picked out fifty family slides from thousands that document our family history. Mu husband and I had the slides transferred to a CD. One of the slides, taken in 1944, is only the slightest bit faded and has an ethereal beauty, showing the tenderness between my mom and dad.

For Christmas, my husband printed two photos from that slide for me and my sister. I love to gaze at the photograph and imagine the time when my parents were newlyweds and their world was full of promise."

Trish- "My husband, Mike, gave the gift of volunteer help. Our 4th child was due in early January, and after Christmas break, I would have the three older children to get ready every morning and a new baby. Mike arranged for dear women from our church to come over every morning of the work week at 6am to help with the morning routine. Over half a dozen faithful women volunteered to be on our Mom Squad and became part of my best Christmas."

What's the best gift you ever received?

In honor of National Candy Cane Day- a little backstory..

Candy Canes- Terra Hangen

"Does every family in America hang candy canes on their Christmas tree? In my family, candy canes are considered essential ornaments. If someone forgets to buy them, a candy cane aficionado will point out that our tree, with its limbs sagging from a myriad of ornaments, looks downright naked. This causes an emergency run to the local candy cane emporium.

The king of canes in the United States is the red and white variety, but the first candy sticks were pure white and straight in shape. These white confections, created 350 years ago, were first bent into the shape of a cane or shepherd's staff in 1670 by the frustrated choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany.

Each year unruly children disrupted the music during the very long Nativity services, until the choirmaster had the brilliant idea to bend the canes to look like a shepherd's staff, and give them to the children during Nativity services. This gambit worked so well that candy canes were soon doled out at Christmas church services throughout Europe.

The candy cane first appeared in America in 1847. A German immigrant, August Imgard, decorated his tree in Wooster, Ohio, with them. The first red and white striped canes were introduced early in the twentieth century. Soon after, candy makers added peppermint and wintergreen flavors."

Here's a cute idea to celebrate National Roots Day!

Name that Ancestor - Cathy Messecar

Jean Compton from Texas invented a unique game for her grandchildren. She gathered photographs of ancestors and rolls of quarters before children arrived for the holiday dinner and gift exchange,. On the big day, she seated children around her and, using the photos like flash cards, she shared names and told tidbits about their kin in the pictures. Then she went through the photographs a second time, rewarding children with a quarter for each right answer.

She plays the game each year. A banker, she now rewards her teen grandchildren two dollar bills for correct answers. She said, "My grandkids know their family history and can identify all of their ancestors." Just call her Grandma Jeanealogy.

"In Mid December, Arlington National Cemetery graves receive 5 thousand fresh green Christmas wreaths with red bows. Worcester Wreath Company of Maine started the tradition. Owner Morrill Worcester had a dream of doing something for those who gave their lives for this nation. 'We couldn't do anything in this country if it wasn't for the people who gave their lives to protect us.'

The wreaths are laid out in about one hour with different branches of the military and civilians helping. Four are places at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Tech. Sgt. Lisa Rodier, who has helped at least four years, describes the event as 'very emotional'. She wishes everyone could experience honoring our fallen."*
