Nearing the end of her mother’s life, she woke one morning with a plan she quickly put on paper. It would be a non profit thrift store with the sales funding Alzheimer’s research. She opened a small 1,400 sq. store in Fuquay-Va

rina, NC. With the help of her daughter Shari, her sister Martha and husband Dave, this little store grew into a large 26,000 sq. Super Thrift in 4 years! Thanks to our public support, since our beginning we have been able to contribute over $2,500,000 for Alzheimer's Research in the state of North Carolina. All of our profits after operational expenses go to Alzheimer's Research. We also have our second location in Apex at 710 Laura Duncan Road. Thank you to the community for all their support and making our goals come true!

A few weeks ago, Guardian Angel Thrift's Executive Director had the privilege of presenting a grant to the Wake Forest Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (WFADRC) to support the next generation of Alzheimer's researchers.

These funds will provide one - to two-year pilot research grants that help emerging investigators gather critical preliminary data, paving the way for larger-scale federal research funding.

We are proud to support two groundbreaking research projects:

🧠 Dr. Adrian Laxton
"Assessing the Utility of Low-Intensity Focused Ultrasound to Promote Anti-Amyloid Drug Uptake in Amyloid-β Positive Patients with Mild Cognitive Impairment."

🧠 Dr. Marc Rudolph
"Vascular and Inflammatory/Glymphatic Neuroimaging Biomarkers in the AT(NIV) Framework: The Wake Forest ADRC Healthy Brain Study."

We hear this question often, so we asked our experts. The quick answer is that anesthesia does not cause dementia. A recent review of eight studies did not show a clear increased risk of in older adults after anesthesia. Some patients, particularly those with memory problems, may experience short-term confusion (sometimes called delirium) after surgery. This is different from dementia. Before surgery, it is good to talk to your surgeon and anesthesiologist about your personal risk, anesthesia options, and ways to reduce temporary post-surgery confusion.
