Love it at our local restaurant!
Wednesday is kinda Monday for us. Being closed Monday and Tuesday, Sunday sort of becomes Friday so finally getting to a Monday morning email on Wednesday lands at the beginning of our week so here we go. Happy Monday!
Let’s celebrate the wins first! One of our young employees, Cody, is a heck of a runner. He and his teammates of the Galway cross country team just won sectionals and are headed to states. Pretty cool, huh! First time, I think he said, in 25 years. Go Eagles! Cody…best of luck, we believe in you, go get it! And be back by 4:00. We’re gonna be busy Saturday!
Also…FMCC women’s volleyball team is headed back to Iowa today for nationals!! An incredible effort by an incredible team that just happens to have 2 recent Galway alums! Go Raiders!
Might seem a little disconnected from Galway, NY but… GRAMMY nominations have been announced. Not 1. Not 2. But THREE musicians closely connected to The C**k ‘n Bull’s music scene have been nominated this year. Our banjo superhero, Tony Trischka’s album, Earl Jam is up for Bluegrass Album of the Year. Tony brought the band here recently to celebrate the release of the album. It’s incredible. He’s a legend. His Christmas show here is right around the corner and a truly special event annually. Scott Sharrard, as singer, guitarist, songwriter with Little Feat is up for Blues Album of the Year. Scott packed our patio in September and is returning with his band Eldorado Slim in February. Fred Sutch rewired the north end of our dining room specifically for Scott years ago when Scott’s projects required more juice than our typical acoustic acts needed previously. There’s literally a breaker in the attic labeled SHARRARD that Fred installed. Scott’s been known to rock the barn a bit!
For those of you that have seen/heard the band Mile 12 here (they played here about a dozen times) may remember the fiddler, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes. Just a gifted musician. She’s been out on the road the last couple of years with Bull Alumni, Molly Tuttle getting a whole bunch of attention globally and two IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year awards. Bronwyn released her first solo album this year, The World I Built. It’s just beautiful! And also nominated for Bluegrass Album of the Year.
We’re so incredibly happy for and proud of our friends for these acknowledgments and achievements. Best of luck to all..
Miscellaneous recent highlights..
Seeing Ethan and Mary Ball (Carrot Barn) enjoying one of Rick Smith’s pork chops at a table next to Joe and Jessica Anderson (Anderson Acres) raving about the French fries made from Schoharie potatoes, all while Chuck and Sara Curtiss (Willow Marsh Farm) were around the corner working on a braised Kilcoyne Farm beef shank and Hunters Greens from Johnson’s Family Farm. Meanwhile a woman in the bar literally cried when taking the first bite of Andrea’s carrot cake full of rainbow carrots from, you guessed it, The Carrot Barn. The TU and the Gazette may never pick us as the coolest place to eat, but that whole circle of relationships is so incredibly vital and gratifying. Makes me feel like we’re actually doing something worthwhile…
Oona and James (Drank the Gold) have taken over the dining room a few closed days recently to record material for a forthcoming album. It’s been a wonderful soundtrack to food prepping, wood stacking and incidental maintenance. In fact (standby for musician pun) if you listen really closely when the CD is released, I believe in the way way background you may hear me add some percussion. That’s me on the Wusthof, chopping in 3/4 thyme…
Drank the Gold will be playing a dinner time set in the bar this Friday. Come say hi. Not only great musicians but very kind humans.
Chris Carey and Tim Wechgelaer do the dinner time musical duties on Saturday. Not really sure how the schedule happened this way…something to do with someone’s sister’s wedding maybe!? Chris and Tim are wonderful players and pals also. Not as nice as Oona and James but pretty darned nice.
Wednesday the 20th, Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys return to the barn. Word on the street is that Sara Milonovich will be joining them on fiddle. Sara’s pretty good. Should be an OK evening.
Holy cow, this quick email got long in short order.
Freezer is loaded at Village Home & Garden! Frozen soups, lasagna, pot pies, mac ‘n cheese, spent grain bread, and ice cream sammies! Everything you need as the mercury drops. OR…as our freezer mandates for space, we’re having something of a SOUP SALE here at the restaurant. Plan on buying 4 quarts at a time to save some $$. The grownups have more specifics to the details!
Thanks for the read.
