Yes, this is real. Consumer Reports tested 28 dark chocolate bars and found lead and cadmium in every single one. For 23 of them, eating just one ounce a day would put an adult over the level California considers safe for at least one of those metals. Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate Lover's 85 percent came in at 127 percent of the lead limit and 229 percent of the cadmium limit. Trader Joe's 72 percent was 192 percent of the lead limit. Hershey's Special Dark was 265 percent. Godiva 72 percent and Lindt 85 percent were over too. The CDC's position is that no safe level of lead in children has been found, and Consumer Reports says the risk is greatest for pregnant women and young kids. A 2024 George Washington University study of 72 cocoa products found 43 percent over the lead limit. Chocolate is not the enemy, but the label will not warn you.
