I work with wood, so Fagus sent me straight down the rabbit hole. Working steering. A bucket that raises and lowers. A bed that actually tips its load. Beech-wood construction joined without nails, screws, or staples.

Made in Germany, and currently preventing a grown man from getting anything done in his workshop.

I thought I was bringing home blocks. Apparently I was hiring an architect.

Gave my boy a pile of curved wooden Abel blocks, and he made this. I mostly stood there saying, “Are you serious?” A valuable contribution.

Solid beech, one sweeping shape, and room for a kid to take the idea somewhere you never would.

Bought it for the kids. Still waiting for my turn.

I grew up with spinning tops and battle tops, but not quite like these. Mader turns them from regional hardwoods in Austria, and watching one settle into its spin is half the fun.

My kids love this one. Their dad is handling it very maturely, as you can see.

Went in to look around. Left wanting to become a dealer.

Col. Littleton in Lynnville, Tennessee, will do that to you. Leather bags, beautiful hardware, and the kind of details that turn a quick stop into a very long one. Most of their products are hand-cut, hand-sewn, and hand-finished by local craftspeople in their workshop.

This is the kind of maker we love finding for Rarely. We’d love to bring them into the shop.

She wants to help. The gloves should keep up.

My oldest loves being outside with me, hauling wood and finding another job to do. The cheap gloves I bought her didn’t last, and the fit wasn’t much better.

So I got her the kid-sized version of the buffalo leather gloves I wear every day. Same build quality as our adult pairs, sized for smaller hands.

Now the backyard has an assistant manager.

Bought a beautiful lighter. Forgot to ask whether it suited the person using it. That person was me.

I don’t smoke, so it spent more time sitting around than lighting anything. When I reached for it, the lighter fluid had evaporated. Lovely object. Wrong fit.

That sent us looking for something different for Rarely. We found IM Corona in Japan: refillable butane lighters with the weight, finish, and mechanical details we love. The one in this video still lit after sitting for a couple of weeks.

Sometimes finding the right thing starts with admitting you bought the wrong one.

The first boots I ever loved are sitting in a museum.

I bought my Vasque Sundowners at the Red Wing store in Orem, Utah, back when hiking boots were perfectly acceptable everyday footwear. Now I’m looking at the original 1984 Sundowner inside Red Wing’s flagship in Minnesota.

They were unusually light for their era, built from one-piece leather, and among the early hiking boots to use Gore-Tex. Mine just felt like freedom.

Some shoes carry miles. A few carry whole decades.

The stuffed animals have places to be.

Banwood’s First Go balance bike has a steel frame, a wicker basket, and better taste than most of our first cars. The three-wheel Vintage scooter pairs an oak deck with an aluminum frame for the kid who prefers to travel standing up.

We came for the materials. They came to give the entire stuffed-animal collection a ride.
