Episode 80 - An Ear For It with Brandon Robertson

Joining me today, from 2% Certified Robertson Piano, is the man himself, Brandon Roberston. We have a great talk about music, the outdoors and conservation. Music has always been a part of Brandon's life, but it wasn't until recently that he really discovered a love for the outdoors. When he's not tuning pianos or restoring them to their former glory, Brandon enjoys hunting for whitetails and teaching his son the importance of leaving our wild places better than we found them. This is a great conversation about appreciation and stepping out of your comfort zone.

As part of we made a donation to the Alabama Treasure Forest Association's scholarship fund. They offer scholarships to students in Alabama studying forestry or wildlife sciences. If you'd like to make a donation as well you can do it at https://www.treasureforest.org/support/scholarship/

And because it's community conservation day I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that Robertson Piano is in the process of adopting a section of stream on Black Creek and a mile of trail on the Freshwater Land Trust's Red Rock Trail System. We've already been doing water monitoring and have taken what must be close to 100 lbs of trash out of that section of Black Creek this year, but we're working toward making the adoption *official*. Let me know if you'd like to join us sometime! It's easy to stay 6 feet apart outdoors. Or better yet, adopt a mile yourself and invite us sometime :)

"QUIT BANGING ON THAT PIANO!"

You may have wanted to yell that a time or two at one of your children. Because it’s so annoying, keys struck loudly at random can rattle your nerves.

But it won’t damage the piano. Most pianos are built to withstand very heavy use. Watch a professional pianist play or listen to how hard your tuner pounds each key when tuning. In comparison, a child’s small hands couldn’t possibly play that hard.

The real danger is kids dropping small toys inside, slipping coins into the slots between the keys, or running toys across the finish.

So encourage your child to have fun with the piano, not to be afraid of it. Don’t worry if young children play haphazardly and loudly. Teach respect for the instrument and encourage playing and they will be on their way to a lifetime of musical enjoyment.

Visit https://www.ptg.org/piano/students for resources to help get that journey started.
