Today marks the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day. Started in 1966 with the belief and understanding that “Literacy is a fundamental human right for all.” UNESCO works with governments throughout the world to help programs that promote literacy. (Similar to Dolly’s Imagination Library.) Despite all of the work UNESCO has done, at least 739 million youth and adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills in 2024. On top of that 4 in 10 children are not reaching minimum proficiency in reading.

For more information check out UNESCO’s website. https://www.unesco.org/en/days/literacy

RIP Dolly. Thank you for all you did for children’s literacy in this country and internationally. If you didn’t know Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995 in honor of her father who was unable to read or write. Her core goal was to foster a love for reading and learning before children even started school, regardless of their family's income. The program sends free books monthly to children under the age of 5.
The world will be less glittery without you but hopefully we will continue fostering a love of reading in children and adults. ❤️
