Massachusetts law enforcement has made clear this state has a child exploitation problem that runs statewide — and that Fitchburg is not exempt from it. In November 2025, Operation Firewall — a three-day Massachusetts State Police sting spanning 38 communities — resulted in 56 arrests for child sexual abuse material, child enticement, and related offenses. Fitchburg was among the communities where an arrest was made. That same operation's lead investigators noted that Massachusetts ICAC cyber tip volume has surged 270% over the last five years, a figure that reflects how aggressively predators are targeting children in this state. In 2026, the U.S. Marshals Service launched Operation Yellow Card in direct response to exploitation risk surrounding the FIFA World Cup — and recovered 35 endangered missing children from Massachusetts alone, some from as far away as Georgia and Texas. A Boston Globe investigation published in October 2025 identified a Fitchburg group home that reported a missing child to police at least 60 times in six years — a figure DCF's own records dramatically undercounted. That same investigation found that 1 in 7 teens in Massachusetts state care go missing in a given year, and that 80 of those children were identified as known or suspected trafficking victims in 2023 alone.
